Electric Wall Double Ovens
Why Buy a Double Oven
The top performers in our review are the Whirlpool WOD93EC0AS, the Gold Award winner; Maytag MEW9630DS, the Silver Award winner; and Frigidaire FGET3065PF, the Bronze Award winner. Here’s more on choosing a wall double oven to meet your needs, along with detail on how we arrived at our ranking of 10 products.
Whether you are cooking Thanksgiving dinner or for a small dinner party, you need to prepare accordingly so all the food is cooked on time. Double wall ovens help take the stress out of cooking multiple dishes because they provide flexibility and dual power as you prepare your meal. Built-in double ovens are installed directly into your wall so you don’t lose any counter space and can easily reach both ovens without the need to bend down and pull out that 20-pound turkey. Additionally, a double oven allows you to simultaneously cook multiple dishes at different temperatures.
Double wall ovens are different from double oven ranges as they do not feature any type of cooktop. The oven is built at eye level with controls and settings located at the top or between ovens. These ovens feature many of the same controls and settings that you will find on double oven ranges and slide-in ranges. Convection vs. Thermal Cooking
There are two main types of cooking technology available on wall double ovens: thermal and convection. Thermal ovens are your traditional ovens. Heating elements raise the air temperature, which cooks the food. Convection ovens are similar in that they also use heating elements, but the ovens boast a small fan that circulates the hot air throughout the oven’s interior. This causes the food to not only cook at a faster rate but also to cook more evenly. Products with this option on our lineup are generally ranked higher than those that do not. Keep in mind that on many electric double ovens only one of the ovens has a convection cooking mode.
Ovens that feature convection cooking technology also provide multiple convection cooking modes for cooking different types of foods. There are three types of convection modes: bake, broil and roast. With the convection bake mode, the heat is only emitted from the lower heat element in the oven, which makes this setting ideal when cooking foods with crusts, such as pizzas and pies. Convection broil emits heat from the upper element, which is ideal for searing foods such as vegetables and meats. In the convection roast setting, heat is emitted from both elements, making it ideal for roasting meats such as pork or beef.
How to Determine the Right Size Oven for Your Needs
Unless you're building a new house or completely remodeling your old kitchen, your options for oven sizes are probably limited to the current space in your kitchen. Be sure to select a model with the right dimensions for your kitchen layout. Although electric double ovens range in size from 24 inches to 36 inches wide, all of the ovens on our lineup are 30 inches wide.
As you look for the right oven for your kitchen, the oven’s capacity is an important factor. Keep in mind that even though two ovens may have the same exterior dimensions, each oven’s cooking capacity may differ. When looking for the right oven, you should consider how many people you regularly feed. A family of one or two individuals needs an oven with a minimum of 2 cubic feet, a small family of three to four individuals needs a minimum of 3 to 4 cubic feet and a family of four or more will need an oven with at least 4 cubic feet of cooking space.
Electric Wall Double Ovens: What We Evaluated, What We Found
We focused our reviews exclusively on electric double wall ovens. Additionally, all of the products on our lineup fall between $1,700 and $4,000. This is a midrange price point for these products. Less expensive products usually lack many settings or only feature a single oven. Products that cost more are typically for more commercialized or catering businesses. The products on our lineup provide all of your basic baking features as well as a large capacity, numerous controls and settings, and an adequate warranty.
For our comparison, we considered the size of each oven and whether it has convection capabilities. Physical design and cooking features all played a role in determining the best double ovens. We looked at how many color options each model offered, the number of racks it included and whether basic safety features such as automatic shutoff capabilities and door locks were present.
What Else Is Important?
There are several additional factors you should consider as you look for the best double wall oven for your home. Here are a few more features you should look for.
Electric wall double ovens come with two main types of self-cleaning options: heat and steam. Heat is the most popular option on built-in wall double ovens. With this feature, the oven reaches a high temperature for extended periods of time, which helps burn off debris and spilled food. However, because of the high temperatures of heat cleaning cycles, a significant amount of energy is used to clean the oven. Additionally, the outside of the oven can become hot enough to burn someone.
Steam is the second popular option; the oven creates steam to clean debris and spilled food in the interior of the oven. With this type of cleaning option, ovens use water and heat to clean the inside of the ovens, but the ovens usually clean at much lower temperatures. Steam cycles also take less time than standard heat cleaning cycles. All products on our lineup provide heat cleaning capabilities. However, only a small handful of models also offer steam cleaning technology.
Wall double ovens are built directly into your cabinets, which means the ovens require more installation than a freestanding product. The cabinets must be cut out to a certain dimension for the cooktop to fit properly inside. The cut-out dimensions will differ on each product, and you will want to follow each product’s specific installation requirements and guidelines.
These products are a large investment and should be covered under a lengthy manufacturer’s warranty. Most electric wall double ovens feature a one-year manufacturer warranty for parts and labor. However, several products on our lineup are covered for three years or longer. These products were considered much higher than those that are only covered for one-year.
Wall Double Ovens: Our Verdict and Recommendations
The Frigidaire FGET3065PF, our Bronze Award winner, provides a full feature set. It provides steam cleaning options along with a traditional heat self-cleaning cycle. You can remove minor spills and messes with a basic two-hour cleaning cycle, which is the shortest self-cleaning cycle we saw in our comparison. Additionally, this electric wall double oven comes with three color choices and six oven racks.
The Maytag MEW963ODS, our Silver Award winner, provides a 10-year warranty for its parts and labor. All other products we reviewed only offer a one-year warranty. It also boasts 5 cubic feet of cooking space in each oven, which makes this product one of the best for cooking large dishes – or multiple dishes simultaneously.
The Whirlpool WOD93EC0AS, our Gold Award winner, has both convection and thermal cooking technology as well as four color options so you can find the look to perfectly match your kitchen.
Another product that deserves to be noted is the GE JT3500EJES. This electric wall double oven lacks convection cooking capabilities, but it provides steam cleaning options – a definite plus when the oven needs deep cleaning. Each oven features 5 cubic feet of cooking space, making it one of the largest ovens on our lineup.
With a wall double oven, you have plenty of space to cook multiple dishes at once and impress dinner guests with your perfectly timed cooking.
