Labour Day sales 2024: what you need to know
When was Labor Day?
Labor Day was the first Monday in September which, this year, was September 4th, 2023. Labor Day weekend started Friday, September 1st, and lasted through that Monday.
However, we saw brands and retailers launch their Labor Day early sales a couple of weeks prior the start of September. The Home Depot, for example, announced that savings start 8/24 so we kept a look out for deals starting from there-on-in.
What we expect to see
Labor Day weekend is an excellent opportunity to fit in some shopping before hectic schedules take hold. Summer may be almost over, but you can usually expect to see massive discounts on summer gear, like patio sets, outdoor furniture, grills, along with the usual suspects like electronics and mattresses. It may not make sense to buy items for the summer when the season is dwindling down to an end, but by next year, you'll be glad you did.
Mattresses: A select few mattress brands will offer a small discount on their items for Labor Day: those last minute back-to-school shoppers who will be living away from home may want to look into brands like Casper for bargain mattress buys.
Clothing: Some stores are just introducing their fall collections, but the massive discounts are usually seen in the summer clothing sections. Why? These Labor Day sales are also, in part, clearance sales to make room for newer collections.
Outdoor furniture and grills: For the same reasons as above, many stores are clearing out their warehouses of the latest models of summer and outdoor gear and furniture to make room for next season's, resulting in decent discounts for customers.
Electronics: As people prepare to stay indoors during the colder weather, it makes sense to offer upgrades on electronics like TVs and computers that will keep them occupied during the fall and winter months.
