Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 Review

Author by

PROS / Samsung uses an excellent Exynos processor for the Tab S2.

CONS / The tablet suffers from average battery life.

VERDICT / Samsung's latest tablet offers stellar speed and specifications for home users.

For new tablet owners, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 offers a strong combination of performance and design optimized for mobile users. Internally, the tablet relies on Google's Android mobile operating system and is built on a 1.3GHz Exynos 5433 processor that produced exceptional marks in benchmarking by our colleagues at Laptop Mag. In processor test Geekbench 3 and graphics test 3DMark, the tablet put up respective marks of 4,113 and 19,388 points. Both marks are among the best in class for our evaluated tablets. In practice, the S2 has the performance ceiling to handle high-end gaming or work with ease.

The tablet's specifications are similarly in line with comparable mainstream tablets. With dimensions of 7.8 x 5.3 x 0.22 inches and a weight of 0.58 pounds, the S2 is light and thin enough to easily fit into a drawer or backpack. You can purchase the Samsung in 32GB or 64GB configurations, and micro-SD support provides storage flexibility.

However, the tablet's battery life is a notable misstep in comparison with its competitors. In Laptop's testing, a tablet scrolls through webpages at a constant brightness until the battery powers down. During this test, the S2 put up a subpar mark of 7 hours and 42 minutes. Most mainstream tablets average between eight and nine hours of battery life.

The display is a strength of the tablet. With a resolution of 2560 x 1440 and a brightness rating of 330 nits, the S2 doesn't have top brightness levels, but it's more than sharp enough to handle fine-detail content like photos and small text. The tablet also includes a 2.1MP front-facing camera, which is slightly above average, and 8MP rear-facing camera for photos and video, which is about standard for tablet computers' rear cameras. By default, Samsung includes a one-year warranty on the Tab S2 and offers support through phone, live chat and social media. In-person assistance is also available through the Samsung Experience Shop retail locations.

As competitive as the current tablet market can be, the Galaxy Tab S2 shows why Samsung remains a strong player. While its battery life leaves room for improvement, strong specifications and stellar design make the S2 a versatile tablet.
