Pros / Kroll Ontrack EasyRecovery recovered 100% of data lost due to deletion and 85% to 100% of files lost due to reformatting.

Cons / The Mac version lacks options for saving scans or previewing recovered files.

Verdict / While this software did an excellent job retrieving lost files, it lacked some features that would make it easy to use, especially when you only need to recover specific files.

Ontrack EasyRecovery for Mac matched the best Mac data recovery software programs for recovering nearly all types of data, falling short only in recovering media files from a reformatted disk. It's a fast program that does not sacrifice speed for performance. However, it lacks some features that make it harder to use than its competitors.

When testing, we considered the two most common scenarios: data lost to deletion and data lost when a drive is reformatted. We also looked at three file types: images, documents, and media (video and audio files). In nearly every test, Ontrack performed exceptionally well. It recovered all the image, document and media files that were deleted as well as all images lost by reformatting. It found 99% of the documents lost from reformatting. In these areas, it tied with our number one product.

It only fell short when recovering media files lost to reformatting – 85%. However, it should be noted that this was the hardest test for all programs, with an across-the-board recovery rate of 73%, and one product with an average as low as 41%. Data Rescue 4, our top pick for data recovery software, recovered an average of 98% of lost files across all file types.

This is a terrific program if you are willing to work with some of its idiosyncrasies. Of most importance is the inability to save a scan or preview files. This can be a problem if you need to recover files at a later date than the scan or if you are only interested in retrieving a few particular files. It also does not start a deep scan if the quick scan fails. Kroll was the fastest for scanning and recovering.

The Mac version does not offer networking capability or multiple licenses, which could be an issue in a larger office, but it does provide free upgrades and a technician version. It can also perform data recovery on RAID systems. If you need to recover data remotely, we recommend R-Studio, our top pick for businesses.

This disk recovery software developer provides support via phone, live chat and email. Its knowledgebase includes articles about the industry, and it also has online courses through its Data Academy, but those cost extra.

Summary

Ontrack EasyRecovery is highly effective data recovery software for the Mac. While not as easy to use as others we reviewed, particularly if you only need to find a particular file, it is among the best for locating and retrieving lost data.
