Pros / Express Burn is one of the speediest Mac DVD burning software applications we reviewed.

Cons / This program can't remove copy protections from commercial DVDs.

Verdict / This is a great choice if you want to duplicate homemade DVDs. It can't decrypt commercial DVDs, however.

Editor’s Note: The Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) forbids circumventing copy encryptions contained on commercial discs. The DMCA makes no exceptions for circumventing these encryptions for personal use. Top Ten Reviews does not endorse piracy or any other illegal activity.

Express Burn is among the fastest burning applications we found, clocking in at 45 minutes to create a copy of a DVD.

With burn times running under an hour, you can save a lot of time, especially if you have a large collection of movies to copy. However, it lacks some features that prevent it from being among the best Mac DVD copiers we evaluated.

The best DVD burning software for Mac can remove copy protections, but Express Burn lacks this ability. Without this option, not all commercial DVDs can be legally copied. This means there's a strong chance the DVDs in your movie library burn to your Mac with this program. Without decryption, you’re limited to copying unprotected and homemade discs.

Express Burn gives you the option of including or omitting the bonus materials available on the burnt DVD. You can decide whether or not you want to include the menus, special features and trailers. Additionally, the preview option gives you the ability to see exactly what you're copying so you know what your new disc will look like.

There are comprehensive output formats available for this Mac DVD burning software. Not only can you burn a DVD, but you can specify whether you want it to be compatible with players in the United States, Canada or other countries, which is the NTSC format. It also has an option for the PAL format used in Europe.

One other feature missing from Express Burn is video file compression. This tool lets you fit large movies onto smaller capacity, DVD-5 discs. The DVD movies found in stores are often contained on DVD-9s – discs with 9GB of storage. The best Mac DVD burning software has the ability to shrink these movies to fit onto the smaller, less expensive, DVD-5 discs that have 5GB of space.

NCH, the maker of Express Burn, offers substantial help and support. The program is easy to use, with many settings and options. But you'll need practice to learn all the variables found in this software. The product manual has some good information, but it's only accessible when you're running the program. If you're having a problem running the software, the in-program help manual won't be much help. NCH also has additional information and email support on its website.

Express Burn offers a huge advantage if you want to save time while burning DVDs. If you copy any commercial DVD, you will soon run into its biggest limitation, which is its inability to strip away copy protections or compress large files to smaller blank discs.
