After extensive testing, we think the HP OfficeJet Pro 8740 best wireless inkjet printer. With solid mobile printing support and innovative refinements to all-in-one functions like scanning, copying and faxing, it earns its high rank with excellent document printing and fast print speeds. It’s not just our top-rated wireless printer, it’s also the best all-in-one printer for your small business or home office.

The OfficeJet Pro impressed us with some of the fastest print times in our review, printing black-and-white documents at a speed of 16 pages per minute (ppm) and color documents even faster at 20 ppm. The print quality was also very good, with sharp, readable text down to 4-point type and relatively clean printing at default settings.

The OfficeJet Pro may be one of the best all-in-one printers we reviewed, but it still has its flaws. Black-and-white documents we printed had some unwanted ink spots, but it was minor enough that unless you examined the prints under high magnification - which we do in our print evaluations – the spots would be hard to even see. Color documents were similar, with slightly flat color reproduction and very minor banding, but these flaws were significantly less noticeable than on prints from competing systems. More impressive, these errors were only visible when documents were printed at default settings; documents printed at higher print quality settings were nearly flawless.

This all-in-one printer only showed real weakness when printing photos. One of our test prints was actually damaged slightly by the printer, leaving a scuff on the photo paper. The photo print quality was also lackluster, without the sharpness and clarity we saw from the Canon Pixma MG7720 or other competitors. That said, the OfficeJet Pro isn’t built to be a photo printer, designed instead for churning out documents in an office environment.

The OfficeJet Pro has an easy-access four-slot cartridge design, and inserting a new ink cartridge is as simple as sliding it into the slot and pressing gently until it clicks into place. An extra-large black cartridge keeps you printing text-heavy documents longer, while the smaller color cartridges are still more affordable than average. Standard-capacity refills work out to 12 cents per page when sold for the manufacturer-suggested retail prices. The cost per page drops to 10 cents if you buy HP’s higher-capacity ink cartridges.

If you want to reduce ink expenses further, HP also offers discount inks by mail through its InstantInk subscription service. The printer and related software monitors your usage and ink levels to predict when you’ll need a refill and proactively orders replacement ink, heading off hassles that send you running to Office Depot in a panic. The InstantInk service charges a monthly fee, which can be adjusted from month to month to accommodate changes in print output. That single expense covers all of the ink, delivery expenses and even recycling for the empty cartridges.

In addition to reasonable ink prices, the OfficeJet Pro is quite durable. Built for high usage in office environments, it has a duty cycle of 30,000 pages per month, or up to 1,000 pages per day.

The printer features both a built-in 250-page primary paper tray and a second stacking 250-page tray that brings the total capacity up to a whopping 500 pages. Both trays accept standard printer paper in sizes up to 8.5 x 14 inches, as well as glossy and matte papers for brochures and specialty prints, cardstock, letterhead, and photo paper.

The printer supports direct printing from USB and can also send scanned images and archived faxes directly to USB storage or email. Aside from a lone USB port, there are no media card slots and no support for direct printing from cameras.

For improved confidentiality in shared offices, the printer ejects printed pages face down and has several other security features like password protection and badge-based authentication. The printer is also compatible with most network security tools and firewalls.

A touchscreen control panel lets you navigate menus and settings, with an interface that mimics smartphone functions. For improved ease of use, the printer also supports programmable shortcuts, giving users one-button access to preferred settings and frequently used functions.

This all-in-one wireless printer has all the broad functionality you expect from such a machine, with several wireless connectivity options and built-in scan, copy and fax capability. With Wi-Fi Direct, it connects via Wi-Fi to PCs and mobile devices without requiring network access. Its support for both Apple AirPrint and Google Cloud Print covers most smartphones and tablets, but it also supports Mopria mobile printing and HP’s own app. The OfficeJet Pro is also unique in that it includes a fax cable, which even the best multifunction printers usually require users to supply themselves.

When we tested scan and copy functions, the overall quality was passable but not especially notable. However, one feature did stand out – the printer has single-pass two-sided scanning, so you scan both sides of a document at the same time, without having to manually flip the page for a second pass. This feature alone can save you a lot of time scanning or copying large double-sided documents.

Another feature that appeals to office users is the inclusion of Radaris Pro 14, an optical character recognition (or OCR) program that makes searchable PDFs out of scanned documents. Searchable text is a huge plus when digitizing records, and OCR makes that automatic.
