Performance

With 1,725 watts of power, the FV4495 lets you easily tackle any kind of ironing or steaming project. It heats up to 500 degrees Fahrenheit, giving you the versatility and power needed for difficult projects or for quick steam touch-ups. Its quick heat-up time of 24 seconds for the lowest setting means you won't be left waiting.

The ceramic soleplate measures 9.25 inches in length, and it is nonstick and scratch-resistant. It also circulates steam, letting you have more steam on a regular basis, if desired, than you get with most irons. The built-in anti-calcium and anti-scale systems minimize mineral deposits, keeping the soleplate in good condition and reducing the possibility of gunk leaking out onto your fabric.

It has 64 steam holes, which is a great number for vertical steaming. A dial dedicated to steam intensity lets you have control over how much steam you want to use at any given time. The steam-burst button is easy to access, and you only have to wait about 10 seconds between series of bursts.

Ease of Use

This iron has the longest cord on our lineup, measuring 12.21 feet, which is perfect for sewing projects, as it gives you plenty of freedom while you work. It swivels as well, so it's never in your way. The FV4495 is also comfortable to hold and maneuver, with a soft grip. The water-spray and steam-burst buttons are large and easy to press, and the fabric temperature dial is easy to understand and use. However, if you prefer a digital display, check out the Singer Expert Finish.

The iron's built-in water reservoir is easy to fill up, having a wide port, and its transparent tank makes it easy to see the current water level. It holds 9 ounces of water at a time, which is above the average of the irons on our lineup. The reservoir panel also seals shut, so the iron doesn't leak water if it tips over. It also has a self-cleaning function, which keeps the iron in better shape for longer.

With the soleplate facing down, the FV4495 measures 5.9 x 5.3 x 11.1 inches and weighs 2.5 pounds. It is well balanced and does not feel clunky. It glided easily across all the fabrics we tested, and it never snagged or became difficult to use. We liked the temperature-alert light, which tells you when the iron has heated up to the desired temperature.

Safety

If you leave the FV4495 plugged in but unused for eight minutes on the heel, its safety feature kicks in, automatically turning the iron off, to prevent burning or further damage. If the iron is left face-down on any surface or tipped on its side unused for 30 seconds, it also turns off at that point. The iron stays cool as you use it, so you never have to worry about touching a hot dial, button or water reservoir cover.
