The Layla Memory Foam Mattress easily hits that sweet spot between value, comfort and support, and is a good choice for anyone unsure of whether they're better off sleeping on firmer beds, soft beds, or somewhere in between. That's because the Layla Memory Foam offers two different levels of firmness: one side is soft, cozy and ideal for snuggly sleep, but flip it offer and you'll discover a firmer, supportive side to better support your neck and back.

Layla Sleep isn't the only brand to offer dual-firmness technology (more on this below), but to sell it at such an affordable price point is rather novel. As we'll explore further in our Layla Memory Foam Mattress review, it's also designed with copper-infused gel and a dedicated cooling layer to prevent overheating.

Like many of the best mattress online brands, Layla Sleep also offers it on a 120-night trial, giving you enough time to ensure it's right for your health needs and sleep style. For our Layla Memory Foam Mattress review, we look at the spec, price, features, design and user reviews to help you figure out if this is the right choice for you. We'll also point out any suitable alternatives from our best cooling mattress guide that are also worth considering.

Layla Memory Foam Mattress review: Benefits

A mattress is much more than just a surface to sleep on. A good one can improve your general wellbeing by ensuring you rest well, and help protect your posture by promoting better spinal alignment when you're lying down.

Purple is one of the best-known brands for superb support and pressure relief, thanks to its proprietary Purple Grid Technology. For a great example of this, read our Purple Hybrid review. This model is often on sale among the best Purple mattress deals and discounts too.

The Layla Memory Foam Mattress focuses on three key areas to help you sleep better:

Pressure relief
The soft side  is designed to provide ample pressure relief coupled, especially on key 'high impact' areas such as your neck, back and hips. This is coupled with a cooling fabric cover atop a three-inch layer of foam. This combo should feel pretty heavenly for most side sleepers and it will also work to stop any overheating.

Cooling performance
Layla has added copper particles into the gel in the memory foam to create a refreshing, cooling surface to relax and sleep upon. There are many reasons why you might feel hot during sleep, ranging from certain health conditions to your bedroom not being well-ventilated. The Layla can at least help draw away excess body heat so that it doesn't build up in the mattress throughout the night.

Motion isolation
Sharing a bed with someone who wriggles around a lot in bed can be disruptive to your sleep. The Layla Memory Foam Mattress aims to minimize this disruption with its use of motion transfer control, so you shouldn't feel your partner tossing and turning as much as you normally would.

Layla Memory Foam Mattress review: Design

We love the dual-sided nature of the Layla Memory Foam, giving you a soft feel on one side and a firmer, much more supportive feel on the other. The firm side offers a firmness rating of seven out of ten, while the soft side delivers a firmness rating of four out of ten. It isn't the only dual-firmness bed you'll find - check out our Saatva Zenhaven review for a flippable, all-latex model with dual firmness. Pro tip: the Zenhaven is regularly $200 off with the best Saatva mattress discounts.

Remember that copper-infused gel we mentioned earlier in our review? Well, this has several properties that work together to promote a decent night’s sleep. On top of a cooling performance, the copper particles react to the pressure of your body weight, amping the level of firmness you'll feel.

In total, the Layla Memory Foam Mattress has six distinct layers that work in harmony. On the top you’ll find a fabric cooling cover for the soft side, designed with a zipper for easy removal. Next up is the three-inch copper-gel memory foam layer for body heat transfer and antimicrobial odor control (thanks to those copper particles).

Underneath that sits a two-inch max airflow support foam layer to ensure that mattress hugs your body for an almost weightless feel. The four-inch support core foam is up next for minimal bounce yet maximum motion transfer control. There's another layer of copper-gel memory foam, but this one is just one-inches thick. On the very bottom of the Layla Memory Foam sits the cooling cover for the firm side.

Layla Memory Foam Mattress review: Features

So much more than just a memory foam mattress, this Layla Sleep bed focuses on comfort, cooling and cleanliness. That soft-touch cooling cover is boosted by Thermo-Gel technology to keep you feeling cool during sleep, with reactive cooling to suit your changing body temperature. The cover is also zipped for you to remove and clean separately.

At the centre of the mattress is a four-inch layer of core support foam that gives durability to the mattress as well as provides support and structure to keep bounce and motion transfer to a minimum. This provides just the right level of support whether you choose the soft side or the firm side.

Because copper is naturally antimicrobial, the microscopic copper gel-infused particles found in the Layla Memory Foam Mattress can help fight bacteria that causes odors, ensuring it stays fresh and hygienic for longer.

Layla Memory Foam Mattress review: User reviews

At the time of publication, there are over 6,800 user reviews for the Layla Memory Foam Mattress. You can search through these reviews for specific subjects such as 'softness', 'temperature', 'warranty' and 'regrets'. Interestingly, Layla Sleep displays the sleep habits and age range of each reviewer, so you can get a clearer idea of how the mattress might suit you if there's someone with similar sleep habits to you.

The most recent positive Layla Memory Foam user reviews focus on how comfortable it is, even for side sleepers. Customers also like the cooling performance, especially during the summer months.

One reviewer commented how, "It is odor free, cool, and I can easily change positions from back to side.” Another, who experiences chronic upper and lower back pain, explains how, "this mattress is the only one I've been comfortable in in the last ten years! Absolutely love the soft side for side or back sleeping!"

Less favorable reviews questioned the support and how it isn't as firm as Layla Sleep claims. Another complained how the Foundation (base) made the mattress too hard to sleep on. We noticed that the customer services team were quick to respond to any queries and offer help for any issues raised.

Layla Memory Foam Mattress review: Trial, shipping, refunds

The trial on the Layla Memory Foam Mattress is 120 days with a money-back guarantee. This should give you a fair chance to try it at home before fully committing. Layla asks customers to sleep on the mattress for at least two weeks, plus if you do decide to return it, there are no return fees or shipping fees.

Shipping to the contiguous United States is free, while the cost for shipping to Alaska, Hawaii, and Canada is applied at checkout. To make things convenient, the mattresses are compressed, rolled and packaged in a box for easy delivery. It takes two to three days to craft the mattress, and then shipping takes around one to four days depending on your location.

Layla offers a generous lifetime warranty on its Memory Foam Mattress to cover materials and workmanship, including sagging of more than an inch, loss of shape, splitting or cracking foam, and loss of mattress height. We'd recommend reading the warranty terms and conditions thoroughly before making a purchase.

Should you buy the Layla Memory Foam Mattress?

If you’re unsure of what firmness to go for, the Layla Memory Foam Mattress, like the Saatva mentioned earlier in this review, is an excellent option to consider. With plenty of versatility and pressure relief, as well as added features to keep you cool and comfy during sleep, the Layla Memory Foam Mattress is a good way to enjoy luxury sleep for less.

Layla Memory Foam Mattress: Top three alternatives

  • If you have a heavier body weight, you might want to try a firmer mattress all round as you'll get better support. Take a look at our Helix Mattress review for an example of an affordable mattress that can be customized in terms of firmness.
  • For an even more affordable option, read our Tuft and Needle Original review. This cheap cooling mattress uses graphite and cooling beads to combat overheating.
  • Finally, for hotel quality comfort and a cool-touch feel, we'd recommend the Saatva Classic. It's also a winner for anyone experiencing back and neck pain.
