Pros / With a software license to SureThing, you get access to Design Cloud, which has tons of extra clipart, templates and backgrounds for labels.

Cons / The track manager feature is difficult to use at times and doesn't always recognize your media.

Verdict / With its modern interface, photo-editing tools and thousands of graphics, SureThing Disc Labeler is the best software for CD and DVD labeling. However, some of the features may choke from time to time.

Editor's Note: SureThing Disc Labeler 7 is now available. Clicking the Buy button will take you to this version for purchase. We will evaluate, rank and review the new version when we next update the Label Making Software reviews. Meanwhile, enjoy our review below about the SureThing Disc Labeler 6.

SureThing Disc Labeler gives you a slick interface, a track list manager for mix CDs and access to its online media base, Design Cloud. The graphics in this label making program are SVGs, or scalable vector graphics, meaning they do not warp or pixelate with resizing or editing. These qualities earn SureThing Disc Labeler our top pick for best label making software.

Disc Labeling

SureThing already has more than 5,000 design and paper templates in the software. One of the best reasons to purchase SureThing is the paid perks like Design Cloud. Design Cloud is the unlimited database from SureThing that gives you access to more clip art, templates and design ideas. Design Cloud is also a good way to talk to SureThing developers directly. If there's a graphic missing that you'd like to see, you can send SureThing designers suggestions for more graphics to include through Design Cloud.

The track list feature imports song titles and artists from playlists or your disc drive onto your CD label. This feature works with iTunes, Windows Media Player, RealPlayer, Winamp and most other music players. With the click of a few buttons, your song information imports directly into your project. You can edit the playlist data so the fonts and song order match your preferences.

We tested the track list importer with an album of our own with some difficulty. While the information populated eventually, we had to go through several tries to figure out the process.

Once the track list populated, we had to edit it to remove the unnecessary commas and quotation marks that were placeholders for data fields. Before you import the track list, make sure you specify the data fields you want on the CD. Data fields include information already on the disc like artist, song title, album title and song length.

This software lets you import images and incorporate them into your background design, so you can make photo collages and more personalized labels. You can scan images or upload pictures from your digital camera directly into SureThing. The software includes some basic photo-editing tools that let you add brightness, color and transparency to your design.

Design Tools

You have thousands of different background and clip art images to choose from with SureThing. You can also design your own by importing images and photos. SureThing has scalable vector graphics, or SVGs. Even though SureThing has a smaller library of images than label-making software like Label Factory, the images you do get are higher quality because you can adjust the size of your graphics to fit the CD or DVD without distorting the image. SVGs also keep your design from overlapping onto another CD label or photos within your design. You can easily coordinate your labels and disc covers with a few clicks of your mouse, or use the same design so two or more covers are an exact match.

The right font can improve a label greatly. Text in SureThing is adjustable by size, color and font. This software also includes basic design options, such as adding lines and shapes and using the crop tool. You can circle your text, bending and arching it to follow the circular shape of the disc label. With the alpha-blend feature, you can make text blend into the background, or you can make it pop out with the 3D text effects feature.

Label Types

SureThing allows you to design media labels for CDs, DVDs, mini CDs, Blu-ray discs, CD business cards and even vinyl records. Audio and videocassette designs are also available. You can create inserts for jewel cases and disc sleeves too.

When you are ready to print, you don't have to worry about purchasing specialized disc labels for your project. SureThing is programmed to accept any brand of disc labels. You just select the brand and size and you are ready to print. If you want to create a label that is not in the menu, you can customize SureThing to recognize your label size and type, then you can save those settings for your future projects.

You can even forgo the labels altogether. LightScribe is a direct printing program that SureThing supports. LightScribe lets you print images and text directly onto the disc. You will first need to install LightScribe on your computer and have a printer capable of disc printing. LightScribe also creates nametags, file folders and other office labels.

Ease of Use

There are 19 tutorials to guide you through each step and aspect of this software, with additional help available through Design Cloud. You can export your labels in compatible file types like JPEG or PNG. This allows you to edit the label in more advanced photo software or share it with others.
