WinX HD Video Converter is a mixed bag in our review of the best video converter software applications. It offers the largest library of conversion and optimization profiles of all the products we reviewed, and the converted videos are nearly indistinguishable from the originals. However, the interface is a bit difficult to navigate, and it's missing some of the extra components we looked for during our evaluation.
The first thing to know about this program is the mammoth selection of conversion options it offers. With more than 400 conversion profiles, you'll not only be able to switch out file formats, but also optimize your videos for playback on nearly any device (popular or obscure) you own. You'll find profiles from everything from smartphones and tablets to televisions, set-top boxes and gaming systems. This program even makes videos designed for use in other applications such as video-editing software.
This program’s workflow is quite different than all the other programs we reviewed. When you load a video to be converted, you’re automatically sent to a window where you must pick an optimization profile, whereas other programs don’t force you to take that step immediately. For first-time users, this can be confusing since they’re not familiar with how this kind of software works. However, once that hurdle is overcome, it shouldn’t be too difficult to get the hang of the program.
During our testing phase, we inspected each converted file for flaws in both picture and audio. We found little wrong with the video files produced by WinX. Only minor pixelation problems were spotted, which an untrained eye most likely won’t notice. The audio was flawless when compared to the original.
One of the issues that held this product back is how long it takes to convert a video. In our tests, it took this program 40 minutes to convert an hour-long video. This isn't too bad considering the quality of the conversion; however, the best video converters can accomplish the same task with equal to better quality in less than five minutes.
Another drawback is that it's lacking certain features that allow you to customize your videos. You’re limited to simple trims and crops. Other programs we saw allow you to add effects, watermarks and filters, adjust picture values like saturation and brightness, rotate images or flip them horizontally and vertically. These abilities would give you much more control over your project, and WinX would be well served to include them in the future. If you need these tools, consider Wondershare Video Converter.
The best video converter software we reviewed include an option to burn your converted videos to a DVD, complete with chapters and menus. Unfortunately, WinX does not have this ability.
If it's selection and quality you're after, WinX HD Video Converter is an excellent choice for video converter software. It can optimize your video for nearly any device you own, and it produces high-quality video files. However, if you're looking for a quick conversion, you should check out the products that placed in the top-tier of our evaluation.
