Pros / The Canon imageCLASS MF249dw is one of the more affordable multifunction printers on our list.

Cons / The printer's overall print quality is hit or miss, despite printing clean, readable text.

Verdict / The Canon imageCLASS MF249dw is a personal laser printer that delivers black and white printing and multifunction capabilities like scanning, copying and faxing, all for a reasonable price.

The Canon ImageCLASS MF249dw is a black and white multifunction laser printer with built in scanning, copying and faxing capability. While it's not the best budget laser printer we tested, it is one of the most affordable multifunction printers we reviewed.

The 30-pound printer is larger than the most desktop laser printers but is still far easier to move than some of the 70-pound behemoths we evaluated. The printer is also small enough to fit well on a desk or table, measuring just 15.4 x 14.9 x 14.2 inches. The 3.5-inch black and white touch LCD screen may not have the bright colors seen on most printer displays, but you'll still be able to intuitively navigate through the printer's menus and options.

Document printing was hit or miss in quality. For example, our text-heavy test document printed with only nine unwanted ink spots in 10 pages of printing, but some of the letters had minute portions cut off of the bottom of each letter. The end result is a legible document, but the text rendering error is disappointing. Like any monochrome laser printer, it replaces color with a halftone pattern, but unlike the other black and white printers in our review, certain colors, such as yellow and other light shades, are represented by such a light pattern that they virtually disappear. Additionally, in images that should have had a consistent halftone pattern, often there were inconsistencies that gave the image a mottled look. The Canon prints 18 pages per minute, which is average for laser printing.

Scan and copy quality is fair but not flawless. Fine detail is captured quite well, but dark portions of images would frequently lose subtle detail and copied pages printed significantly lighter than the originals, causing light color to be washed out.

The Canon imageCLASS MF249dw uses a combined cartridge that contains both the toner powder and the printing drum for the printer. Selling for $84.00 each with an estimated yield of 2,400 pages, the cost of printing works out to just 4 cents per page. The printer has one main paper tray that holds 250 pages, and a manual feeder for nonstandard paper that accepts one page at a time. An automatic document feeder for scanning and copying holds up to 50 pages, and automatic duplexing means that two-sided pages print without hassle.

The printer has decent connectivity for networking and mobile printing with Ethernet and Wi-Fi along with support for Apple AirPrint and Google Cloud Print. Using the Canon PRINT Business app, you can remotely print and scan documents to your phone or to cloud storage and check the printer status even when you're away. There are a couple of holes in the Canon's feature set, however. There is no port for external USB storage and no scanning to cloud storage or social networks without first going through the app.

Canon covers the imageCLASS MF249dw with a one-year warranty. Service and support options include phone and email technical help and an online user's manual.

The Canon imageCLASS M249dw is a fairly good black and white laser printer when you consider its multifunction capabilities and decent mobile printing options. While it doesn't print impeccable documents, it's a reasonably priced personal laser printer, and that's worth something.
