The ProXpress C3060FW is a color laser printer, so you can do far more than just print black-and-white documents. While this does come with the tradeoff of higher toner costs, the added flexibility when printing images and color documents more than makes up for it. It’s also a multifunction printer, with copy, scan and fax capability built in. The extra hardware of a fax, flatbed scanner and automatic document feeder makes it bulkier than a single-function printer, but it significantly expands what the device can do. Navigating the printer's menus and settings is fairly easy thanks to the 4.3-inch color touchscreen; keypad; and standard buttons for power, copying and other controls.

Of the laser printers we tested, the Samsung has some of the best print quality. The text-heavy documents we printed were nearly error-free and readable down to 2-point font. Our 10-page black-and-white text document sample had a mere four errors, and they were only pinprick-size spots of unwanted ink. Our color text sample was actually better quality with no errors, even when examined under high magnification. Printing is also reasonably fast – the machine produced 17 pages per minute whether printing in monochrome or color.

That said, printing wasn’t perfect. There was some noticeable banding in our PowerPoint test and some oddly jagged pixelated lines in one chart in our Excel test. These are very minor problems, and we only saw them in tests designed to challenge specific aspects of printing. By and large, the print quality was among the best we saw, with sharp text, clear images and excellent color quality.

Scanning and copying also produced high-quality documents. The printer captured fine detail very well, and the documents had a wide range of grayscale tones, consistent color, and good subtle shades and gradients.

Ink & Media

For a color printer with four toner cartridges, the Samsung’s price per page is quite reasonable. Standard toner cartridges work out to an average of 17 cents per page, one of the best prices we saw among color printers. For the more frugally minded, Samsung also offers high-capacity toner cartridges at a slightly higher price, but the increased page yield drops the cost to 13 cents per page.

With a 250-sheet capacity for the main paper tray and a secondary input tray that holds 50 pages, you don’t have to deal with frequent paper reloads. It has automatic duplex printing, so you can print on both sides of a page without having to manually flip the paper to refeed it into the printer. Also, this top-rated printer’s duty cycle of 60,000 pages per month means it is built to handle printing as many as 2,000 pages per day.

The ProXpress C3060FW is outfitted for both wired and wireless networking, and it supports mobile printing from both Apple and Android devices. If you want to do more than print, Samsung has its own app that lets you scan files to your phone, print from cloud storage services, save scanned documents to your phone or online, and more.

Other printing features let you print from and scan to USB storage, scan files directly to online services like Google Drive or Evernote, and pair your phone with the printer with just a tap using near-field communication (NFC).
