PROS / The base has a display so you can see caller ID entries or scroll through the phonebook.
CONS / This cordless phone takes 11 hours to recharge, which is longer than other phones.
VERDICT / The AT&T CLP99483 can't match the battery life of the best cordless phones, but its other useful features make it well suited to a home or business environment.
With decades of landline phone service under its belt, we’re not surprised to see AT&T near the top of our lineup. AT&T’s best cordless phone is the CLP99483, and it’s ideal for home or even work. One base can handle up to 12 handsets, giving this phone a real advantage in very large homes or in the workplace. Thanks to its plentiful features and solid design, the CLP99483 earns our Top Ten Reviews Silver Award for home phones.
This cordless phone’s battery performance is disappointing. The handsets take 11 hours to reach full charge, which is considerably longer than most other phones we reviewed. In our testing, we found that all that charging only gets you one day of idle use. Individual handsets likely won’t last throughout a whole day if they’re in use.
That said, the CLP99483’s call quality and range were both very good. Even up to 250 feet away from the base, the signal remained strong, though there was some static and quality dropped a little.
Both the base and the handsets have clear speakerphones that sound great. The phone would be perfect for a conference call in a boardroom or as a desk phone for several employees in an office setting. You can pair a wireless Bluetooth headset to the phone for hands-free operation. This is particularly useful if you don’t like using the speakerphone.
Not only can you pair a headset, but you can also connect up to two cellphones using AT&T's Connect to Cell technology. There is a USB port on the side of the base you can use to charge your cell phone. After you pair your cell phone, you can make and take phone calls and get text messages forwarded to the cordless handsets. This combination is very useful, as you can charge your smartphone but still have access to its calling features through the CLP99483’s handsets.
Both the handsets and the base have large, illuminated buttons, so dialing is comfortable and easy. Plus the buttons have big bold numbers that are easy to read, making it one of the best home phones for those with impaired vision.
The CLP99483 doesn't have an alarm like some other cordless phones do, but it does have an intercom so you can page your family members or coworkers. That’s a smart feature to include with a phone system that can handle up to 12 handsets. The base model ships with four handsets, which will suffice for most families, but more handsets are ideal in a work environment.
Voicemail & Contacts
One huge advantage this cordless home phone has over others is the display on the base. Most models only display information on the handsets. Not only does it have caller ID on each individual handset, the base has a large screen, so you can see past callers or scroll through your phonebook entries.
The phone has enough memory to store 200 names and numbers, and it keeps track of the last 50 callers. It has an answering machine that stores 14 minutes of recorded messages, which is about average for the phones in our review. It’s not an awful lot of time, and you need to be careful about managing your voicemail’s space so you don’t lose important messages.
This cordless phone stores the last 10 numbers you dialed so you can quickly redial them. Some phones on our lineup only keep five numbers in memory.
Help & Support
AT&T provides a one-year warranty for this phone. That’s a standard in the industry. You won’t find much better, but there’s also not much worse on the market. There is also a handful of support options, including telephone, email and even online chat. Those last two are very useful if your phone isn’t working and you don’t have a cellphone to contact AT&T with. You can also download a PDF of the instruction manual or read FAQs on AT&T's website.
This AT&T cordless phone set has a lot to offer and works equally well in a business setting as it does in a home environment. Its large display, loud speakerphones and seamless Bluetooth pairing make it a solid choice. Though its battery performance is somewhat weak, the CLP99483’s strong range and call quality make it one of the best options on the market.
