Functionality

At 3TB, the Roamio Pro has the largest internal hard drive of any DVR we reviewed. With so much space, everyone in your household can record and watch their favorite shows, even at the same time. The hefty hard drive can record up to 450 hours of high-definition (HD) content, up to 3,000 hours of standard-definition (SD) content or a smaller combination of the two types. It also has six tuners, so you to record or up to six shows simultaneously. The more tuners a DVR has, the less likely you are to have scheduling conflicts. As is the case with most TiVo DVRs, it does require a subscription to activate. It also has built-in Wi-Fi, so you can connect to the internet wirelessly.

It is easy to schedule the DVR to record a movie or series of TV show episodes, and it even searches for a specific program in a search that encompasses cable TV offerings and your streaming apps. The DVR also lets you skip commercials when you watch recorded content. If you’re worried about your kids stumbling on inappropriate content, you can adjust the parental control settings.

Access

Since it can access so many different types of content, there’s no wonder the Roamio Pro is one of the best DVRs on our lineup. While it can’t connect to and record anything from satellite, you can watch your favorite shows on cable, video streaming services or a simple antenna. The device connects to cable and Verizon FiOS, as well as apps such as Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Instant Video and VUDU – all without switching inputs or devices.

Input & Output

The digital video recorder has a variety of inputs and outputs, so you can control what you connect it to. It doesn’t support 4K video, but it has most of ports you may need, including two USB ports, which you can use to expand the DVR’s storage capacity. It also has an HDMI port, an Ethernet port, a coax connection, and both component and composite video ports. The fan located on the back of the device keeps it cool.

The DVR recorder is the heaviest of the units we reviewed, weighing in at 6.9 pounds. It is also one of the largest, measuring 16.5 inches wide, 9.7 inches long and 2.4 inches tall. Consider where you want to store it and how it could affect the aesthetic of your media room if it will sit out in the open. However, it comes with a RF remote, which doesn’t require a direct line of sight to work, so you can also store it in a cabinet if you want.

Help & Support

If you need to contact TiVo, there are a few ways to get in touch with representatives. Its customer service reps are available via phone, email or live chat. They are easy to talk to, quickly provide answers to your questions and don’t pressure you to buy additional services or products. Summary

Though the TiVo Roamio Pro is the most expensive unit we reviewed, it has plenty of features to justify its cost. The 3TB internal hard drive is the largest of any DVR we considered, and you have full control over video playback. It can also access content from both cable and streaming video services if you have subscriptions to them.
