Weber is a trusted, respect name in the grilling world. The Weber Summit S-420 is no exception. This gas grill has a lot to offer with plenty of cooking area, an excellent stainless steel construction and complete fuel versatility. The large size may prove problematic for some grillers, but it's a sacrifice you may need to make for the benefits of this gas grill.

Units. BTUs are not the last word on how well a grill can cook, but it helps you determine how much heat a gas grill can produce and how much gas the grill will use. A higher number means more heat, but it also means the grill will use gas more quickly. This BTU count is impressive, but still isn't among the highest in our gas grill reviews. Both the primary burners and the side burner use Weber's Snap-Jet electronic ignition system to get the party started as quickly as possible.

Unlike many other Weber grills, the Summit is missing a rear rotisserie burner. Rotisserie burners are useful for slow cooking meat. Furthermore, this gas grill doesn't use infrared technology. Infrared is a quick and easy way to cook your food, and a popular trend in grilling right now. Some grills integrate both traditional and infrared grilling technology, but the Weber Summit only features standard gas burners. Still, this grill has a natural gas hookup, making it more versatile than most.

Grilling Areas & Dimensions

This gas grill offers an impressive 538 square inches of primary cooking space. If you need more space, you can also use the warming rack – which adds 112 square inches – to keep things hot and ready to eat. The 12,000 BTU side burner is a nice touch that lets you heat up your famous baked beans without using up space by putting a pan on the main burner. This is the gas grill you'd want for a big barbecue party because no guests will have to wait for their burgers to be cooked when others are already being served.

You can fuel a Weber Summit gas grill using either natural gas or propane, depending on which model you purchase. This kind of versatility is important to ensure that you get a grill that fits your situation. Natural gas is quickly becoming a popular way to fuel gas grills because it saves you the embarrassment of needing to run to the local gas station for a propane refill when you run out in the middle of frying up the burgers. Natural gas runs off of your home’s gas hookups, so you will never run out. It is also less expensive over the long haul to run off of natural gas. However, if you do fuel your Weber grill with liquid propane, the Summit features an LED tank scale to let you know when it's time for a refill. Simply touch the button and a light will indicate how much fuel is in the tank.

One of the standout features of this gas grill is its handy Grill Out handle light. The little box unit on the center of the handle has a tilt sensor that will turn on the light when you lift the lid. Grilling is difficult when you can't see what you're doing, so this helpful feature will allow you to grill at night without any problems.

Grill Construction

With the lid open, this gas grill measures 57 inches high, 66 inches wide and 30 inches deep. This unit also weighs 250 pounds. This Weber grill is one of the heaviest grills we reviewed, which for some may be a downside. The wheels make it more mobile than the average heavy grill though. If space isn't an issue and you don't plan to move the grill around very often, the S-420 is the right choice for you.

The housing, cooking grates and burners are all made of durable stainless steel. This gas grill's stainless-steel Flavorizer bars are designed to direct juices away from the burners. This means that flare-ups will be minimized, but you'll still have plenty of smoke to enhance the flavor. Weber thoroughly tests its grills to make sure they can stand up to extreme weather conditions such as high heat and salty sea air, so your Weber grill will be with you for a long time.

Warranty & Support

The Weber website has an extensive FAQs page that features information about gas grills and charcoal grills. You'll also find general tips on grill maintenance and grilling itself on this site. If you can't find the information you're looking for, there is a search feature to help you find it quickly.

It was a little difficult for us to find the manual for the Weber Summit because the company has a wide variety of grill models in several different series on its site, but we eventually found it. You can also contact customer support by phone or email to obtain help or information.

The grill's stainless steel burner tubes are covered by a 10-year warranty, which is reassuring, but it's not as extensive as some of the warranties for other grills we reviewed. The cooking grates are covered by a five-year warranty, so they are guaranteed not to rust or burn through during that time. All remaining grill parts are covered by a two-year warranty.

There is a reason that the name Weber is synonymous with grilling. This Weber gas grill is a well-built machine that is perfect for backyard parties and delicious BBQs. It is made of durable stainless steel that will prevent rusting and help this grill last a long time. It is also backed by an excellent customer support system and warranty. Weber has a well-earned reputation for great customer service. Numerous online customer reviews attests to this. This grill is bulky, so you'll need to make some extra room on your porch or patio. The Weber Summit is easily one of the best gas grills on the market today and the extra heft is a sign of its solid construction.
