PROS / This service offers 89 product categories. You're very likely to find the item you're looking for.
CONS / In order to use the templates, you must have a graphic design program installed on your computer.
VERDICT / There's a lot to like about Uprinting. It offers a wide selection of items plus an online designer tool that anyone can use, all of which makes it a very attractive choice.
Uprinting claims Top Ten Reviews Bronze Award in our review of the best online printing services for several reasons. It has one of the widest product selections of the printing companies we evaluated, and it produced quality results. However, while it offers downloadable templates, you'll need the particular graphic design application to use them. It's a good service for those familiar with graphic design, but we'd like to see more features added for the uninitiated.
Uprinting has a decent product designer where you can build your custom product from the ground up. Simply pick the item you want to design and select the Create Your Design Online option. You'll then be presented with a simple canvas in the shape of your product. From there, you can upload graphics from your computer or buy them from the stock images tab.
You can also add text and basic shapes. You're in complete control over your product's look and feel. Uprinting's design platform is rather easy to learn and use, but it's not as advanced as the designers found in our other award-winning services, which offer more granular control over the elements in your design.
If designing your own product from scratch isn't something you want to do, this online printer offers downloadable templates for all the products they sell. There are a couple of drawbacks to these templates. First, and most important, you must have a graphic design program on your computer like Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and Acrobat, because most of the templates are specific to these design applications. They also offer templates for CorelDraw and Publisher.
The second drawback is that the templates are quite basic. Uprinting highlights where the "safe zones" (the areas where your designs won't be cropped or cut off) are and which canvases are for the front and back of the product. You'll need to have at least a basic knowledge of graphic design and the corresponding applications to use these templates effectively.
One thing this online printing service lacks, which our other award winners had, are in-browser templates. These templates are pre-made designs you can personalize by dragging and dropping your own elements into the designated spots. The addition of this feature would greatly enhance this service, because it would make it much easier for novice users.
Uprinting offers in-house graphic design services, so you can consult an expert about what you want out of your project. They'll then design your product for you based on your instructions. Once you've approve their design, you'll have a unique product – no design skills necessary. This service costs extra, but it's worth the price to have a professionally designed product.
With 89 categories to choose from, Uprinting offers one of the widest selection of customizable products of all the services on our lineup. The average category selection among the services we reviewed was 48. Only two other services offered more product categories than Uprinting.
You can choose from products such as simple business cards, greeting cards, brochures, flyers, and posters to uncommon items like menus, door hangers, DVD covers, wine labels, and much more. If you're looking for a personal or promotional item, there's an extremely high likelihood you'll find it in this online print shop.
When we tested the best online printing services, we ordered identical products from each of them. Our team of reviewers surveyed the results. Of Uprinting's items, they found the printing quality to be quite good, but not the best of the 10 services we reviewed.
The colors were bright and vibrant, and the contrast between black and white was quite stark. However, some of our reviewers noted the paper was thinner and retained more fingerprints than the products we received from the other online printers.
Uprinting offers every finishing option we looked for in online print shops: You can have your paper-based products printed with a gloss or matte finish. Additionally, you can laminate and collate your prints. You can also request hole drilling to fit prints in binders or other holders. You can even add an aqueous coating to your items, which enhances the quality and protects prints from moisture, smudges and fingerprints. Only three services on our lineup offer all these options – the other two were fellow award winners.
Help & Support
Uprinting offers a full array of help-and-support options. You can email the company or call them on the phone during regular business hours. When we contacted Uprinting, we found their representatives to be well-informed and helpful.
The quickest way to get help is to employ their Live Chat service, which connects you instantly to a representative who will help resolve your issue. We experienced the same positive experience with Uprinting's chat services as we did on the phone.
Uprinting landed in the top tier of our side-by-side comparison chart because it offers nearly every feature and tool we look for in the best online printing services. Their online product design tool is basic, easy to learn and can be used by anyone. It offers a wide array of customizable products for personal or promotional uses. The only thing that left us wanting was the lack of in-browser templates. Outside of that, it's hard to go wrong with Uprinting.
