Pros / This software is accessible to new users and usefully familiar to veteran video warriors.
Cons / There isn't anything in this software that isn't in almost all of its competition.
Verdict / "Good enough" is the best way to describe this software. You won't find much use for it outside converting video files from one format to another.
4Media Video Converter Ultimate is a Mac video converter that has all the basic features you need to convert a video file from one format to another. It's relatively simple to use and follows the format set by other applications on our side-by-side comparison chart. The result is a familiar application that does what you expect it to do, but not much more.
The chief functionality of any Mac video converter is to create a new video file with a different wrapper. This is usually done to optimize a video for playback on a specific device such as a smartphone, tablet or gaming system. It can also create files ideal for sharing online at sites like YouTube and Vimeo. These features work well and the software is intuitive, even if you're a first-time user. If you're an advanced user, you'll find the sidebar quite useful because it offers some granular controls over things like bit rate, frame rate and codec.
This software also provides some basic video editing features. You can crop a video or trim unwanted footage. You also have the ability to add watermarks and simple effect filters and play around with the audio a bit. You can even convert 2D footage into a 3D clip, although this feature feels more like a gimmick than anything. These tools are fun, but limited in their usefulness. If you really want to dig into what's possible in the video realm, you'd be well advised to purchase a full-bodied video editing suite that does everything this program does and more, for around the same price.
All of these features work well enough and convert video files as well as any other application on our side-by-side comparison chart. However, it's what this application lacks that keeps it out of the top tier of our review. The software cannot burn converted files onto a DVD, nor can it download video files from sites like YouTube. It also lacks the ability to interface with iTunes. Granted, all these things go above and beyond simple video conversion, but the best Mac video converters have these features.
At the end of the day, 4Media Video Converter is a good video converter for Mac. But it follows the lead of several other products we reviewed and doesn't offer any innovations in the category. You won't have buyer's remorse after this purchase, but you won't have any joyous celebrations either. It's just good enough.
