Pros / It’s portable enough to slip into a pocket or handbag.
Cons / The photo quality leaves a lot to be desired.
Verdict / The LG Pocket PD233 is a photo printer for the smartphone set, with ink-free printing, battery power and easy connectivity.
The LG Pocket PD233 puts smartphone photo printing in your pocket with its fun and simple design. If you want to print photos anywhere, it is a good photo printer with a portable design.
The PD233’s image quality is similar to that of competing portable photo printers from Polaroid and Fujifilm, but it differs in two distinct ways. First, the printing process warps the photo paper, leaving it curled at the edges. The color is also inconsistent, with a noticeably lighter strip along the trailing edge of the print. This faded stripe showed up on all of our test prints and has been seen by other customers, so it is a common issue. Second, the overall color quality is dull, with muted colors and muddied shades.
The printer uses ZINK Zero Ink print technology, which requires special photo paper coated with color-changing dye crystals. The printer heats these crystals to produce the print, which makes the process simple – you don’t need to wait for the photos to dry or worry about ink spills. The refills of ZINK photo paper sell in packs of 10 sheets, which break down to a cost of 50 cents per photo.
The compact photo printer’s size and use of ZINK paper mean it prints 2 x 3-inch wallet-size photos instead of the larger 4 x 6 standard snapshots. You can print normal photos, or you can buy photo paper with an adhesive backing to turn your favorite images into stickers.
The PD233’s primary selling point is its portability. This small photo printer measures just 2.65 x 4.76 x 0.95 inches and weighs 0.47 pounds, so it is small enough to carry anywhere. The printer’s internal battery should last long enough to print 20 photos.
With Bluetooth connectivity and a dedicated app called LG Pocket Photo, you can print digital photos right from your smartphone. However, you can’t print from cameras, media cards or a PC, which limits you to photos on your smartphone or tablet.
LG covers the Pocket PD233 with a one-year warranty, but tech support options are limited. You can contact support via phone, email and live chat on the LG website, but aside from an online user manual, there are no real self-help support options. This lack of support documentation meant that a paper jam halted our testing for the better part of an afternoon, until we realized the faceplate is removable to provide access to the paper slot. This extremely helpful detail wasn’t found in any LG documents we could find.
