As you might have guessed from the brand’s name, the EGO POWER ZT4204L is concerned with using all the strength it has to give you a superior grass-cutting experience. Kitted out with six lithium batteries, this model can reach a top speed of eight miles an hour and run for up to two acres.
As this is an electric, battery-powered mower, you’ll need to charge it via the USB port on the back before you hop on to neaten up your backyard. It claims that it is just as powerful as some of the best riding lawn mowers which are fuelled by gas, but does it live up to those assertions?

EGO POWER ZT4204L review: Design
The EGO POWER ZT4204L promises a mowing experience like “nothing else out there”. It aims to do this through a powerful engine and a maximum operating speed of eight miles per hour, which is at the top end for this type of mower and competes with some of the best gas lawn mowers too.
Its cutting path is 42 inches wide, which is about average given that the range is between 38 and 54 inches, and will be ample enough for you to make your way around your lawn in good time. If a wider cutting path is important to you, check out our John Deere E180 review, which is a model with a 54-inch path.
There are three modes to choose from with the EGO POWER ZT4204L: Control, Standard, and Sport. This is an excellent feature for maneuvering around different parts of your garden, enabling you to alter your drive in areas with more or fewer obstacles. That goes hand in hand with the fact that this is also a zero-turn model, so it can take turns immediately, and allow you to whizz around your garden without waiting to get into the correct direction.
You should feel extremely relaxed in the driving seat too. That's because the EGO POWER ZT4204L has an adjustable hydraulic seat so that you can lean back when you’re behind the wheel, and let the mower do its job. Whilst you’re there, you can also customize your ride however you like, as there’s a shiny LCD screen that gives you a stream of information on the model’s performance, and lets you alter the speed and other factors accordingly. You can even charge your phone as you go, with a handy USB port as part of the interface.
With the EGO POWER ZT4204L, you can cut up to two acres of grass per single charge, which is enough to cover a fairly large garden without needing to stop. When you're done mowing, simply hook it up from the USB port to the charger in your home, which claims to be the industry’s fastest at getting your model up to speed.
EGO POWER ZT4204L review: Features
Opting for the EGO POWER ZT4204L riding mower is an excellent choice for the environment thanks to its zero emissions. Even better, the design of this model’s lithium batteries is compatible with all of the other products from the brand, meaning that you can use the same batteries to power your other EGO POWER mowers and tools.
You can charge up your six batteries simultaneously too, with the process only taking two hours to get your model back to maximum capability. However, the downside is that you only have four batteries included with purchase, meaning there are two other batteries that need to be bought to get up to the fullest charge. That’s an inexpensive inconvenience for customers to go through after their purchase.
The high-intensity LED lights on the EGO POWER ZT4204L allow you to drive your mower at dawn or dusk too. That gives you more hours within your schedule to tidy up your lawn safely, which is great for when mowing becomes a regular task in the summer. It should go without saying, but never ride your mower in complete darkness, as this comes with a high risk of accidents.
Four independent brushless motors make the EGO POWER ZT4204L such a powerful riding lawn mower, capable of delivering 22 horsepower while you’re in the driving seat. The manufacturer says this kind of engine can rival the power and performance you get from gas models, with the added bonus of not having to pay for extra fuel after your purchase. Judging from the user reviews, many happy customers can attest that this mower really does pack as much power as it claims.
EGO POWER ZT4204L review: User reviews
The EGO POWER ZT4204L has a rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars on Lowe’s, gathered from 182 user reviews. Many users commented on the ease of use of this model, as well as how satisfied they were with the riding experience itself.
One such happy reviewer commented: “This mower not only looks cool (a few neighbors already asked me about it), but it rides and maneuvers above expectations, as there are so many customizable elements to it, like the seat, the blade and the traveling speed”.
Another user said they, “loved all the different modes and options making it a personalized cut. Comfort mode suited us the best but the sport mode will get you where you want to be, and fast!”.
Some reviewers were unimpressed by the need to buy the two additional batteries to get this model at its best charging span. They also wished the mower came with more accessories, including the mulch kit and bagger, which have to be bought separately.
EGO POWER ZT4204L review: How it compares to similar models
The major difference between the EGO POWER ZT4204L and other competing ride-on lawn mowers is that it's battery-powered. That means that you don’t have to go through the hassle of replenishing the oil in your model, and it’s better for the environment too. This model has a strong amount of run time and can cover up to two acres, which is one of the longest ranges out there for electric models.
Despite this, some people still prefer to use a gas mower as these run for longer and can be refueled straight away, rather than needing to wait to charge up. If that sounds better to you, we'd recommend reading our Troy-Bilt TB30 R Riding Mower review for an affordable gas alternative.
What’s more, the EGO POWER ZT4204L, though powerful, doesn’t have that many extra features to deal with difficult terrains and conditions. Check out our Cub Cadet Ultima ZT1 review if you need an ultra-sturdy model to help navigate your backyard, as it's designed with an ergonomic seating system to keep your riding experience comfy on uneven terrain.
As far as price is concerned, the EGO POWER ZT4204L isn’t suitable for small budgets. This is a pricey model, with expensive additional accessories, but it’s fair to say that it would certainly be an investment for the future. It also has a five-year warranty, so you have coverage for a good few years to come. For something an alternative model that's more affordable, and surprisingly compact, check out our Husqvarna YTH18542 review.
Should you buy the EGO POWER ZT4204L riding lawn mower?
The EGO POWER ZT4204L is an excellent choice if you don’t want the hassle of a gas riding mower, but still want a powerful machine to perfect your lawn with. It’s better for the environment than competing gas models, and won’t cost you in the future to refuel. The riding experience itself is designed to be comfortable and customizable, with plenty of options to get the exact ride you want, thanks to the adjustable seat and LCD display.
The downfall of this model is that although it's equipped for six batteries and a run time of up to two acres, it only comes with four batteries, meaning there are still batteries for you to purchase. If you’d rather not make additional purchases, check out our Ryobi RY48111 review, which is a very similar model in terms of spec and features.
