This website is easy to navigate and well-designed whether you’re trying to buy or sell gift cards. Before you begin, we recommend clicking the “see how it works” button to watch a short informative video, but then you’re off to the races! Cardpool has been accredited by the Better Business Bureau since 2012 and touts an A+ rating from the group. Checkout is secure as well, so there’s no need to worry when you buy or sell through Cardpool.

Like all gift card exchanges, you get a payout that is less than the full value of the cards you sell. Cardpool promises up to 92 percent, but that will vary depending on the supply and demand of that particular card. This is the best rate of the websites we tested alongside CardCash and Gift Card Granny. Selling your cards is easy if you follow the links on the website. Once you’ve entered the gift card information, you’ll see your payout instantly. This works for both physical and electronic gift cards, but if you’re selling a physical one you won’t need to send it in; Cardpool only needs the electronic information. This is really easy to do online, though if you live in a major city you can also sell unwanted gift cards at Cardpool stores.

During testing we could either sell a gift card directly to Cardpool or list it for resale and wait for someone to buy it. We could get $17.80 for selling a $20 Walmart gift card directly to Cardpool compared to $18.60 if we listed it for resale. That said, this varies by day and by type of card you’re selling, so you would probably see different numbers if you used the website today. Essentially, you’re choosing whether to get paid faster or get paid more. You should also take note another website we reviewed,, partners with Cardpool to sell your unwanted gift cards.

You’ll get your payout in the form of a mailed check or an electronic Amazon gift card. You can also simply trade your unwanted card for a card from another retailer. If you select the paper check option, it will take 5-10 business days to receive it in the mail. The Amazon gift card, on the other hand, will be emailed to you more quickly. We’d recommend the Amazon gift card option because you’re likely to get about 6 percent more for the value of the gift card you’re selling compared to a check. The list of gift cards Cardpool will buy is vast and includes a ton of common retailers including Macy's, American Girl, Dairy Queen,, Safeway and Walgreens.

To test selection, we looked for a gift card from Amazon, Walmart and Target on the same day across all the websites we tested. Cardpool failed and didn’t have any of these gift cards available. Nonetheless, selection can vary day to day, and Cardpool does have a lot of gift cards to pick from. A cursory glance at the home page lists cards from AutoZone, Best Buy, Kohl's and Pottery Barn Kids. You’ll see discounts of up to 35 percent on gift cards available for purchase, and the discount is listed clearly once you pick the retailer you’re looking for. This transparency makes shopping quick and easy. You can buy electronic or physical cards at Cardpool and if you opt for the physical card it will take 3-7 days to receive it in the mail.

Due to a federal regulation passed in 2009, gift cards can’t expire for five years after the date issued, so you don’t need to worry about your cards expiring. On top of that, Cardpool guarantees any cards you buy for a year. You can also do all your shopping on the free Cardpool app, which is great considering some card exchanges don’t have an app at all. This website is just generally easy to use and offers a great return on investment, which is why it’s our pick for best gift card exchange.
