Like other Char-Broil gas grills we tested, the Char-Broil Stainless 463446017 heats up quickly. But when it comes to retaining heat, it doesn't perform quite as impressively. It's hot enough to cook meat effectively, just not entirely evenly.
The electronic igniter lights all the burners effortlessly, and the grill heats quickly – in our tests, it reached 500 degrees Fahrenheit in an impressive two minutes and 44 seconds. For contrast, the longest preheat time we recorded was the Broil King Baron at 11 minutes and 27 seconds. The trade-off is somewhat uneven cooking. It tends to overheat in the middle of the grilling area and cooks less effectively on the sides. With that said, it cooks more evenly than other Char-Broil outdoor grills we tested. The stainless steel grates resist rust, but we found them harder to clean than cast-iron grates.
This is a big barbecue grill with plenty of cooking space. You can fit up to 24 burgers at once on the 480-square-inch main cooking area. There is also a spacious side burner for frying up side dishes for a large group. The warming tray holds up to 10 patties, which is the highest capacity in our review, and only two other grills can match it. This is a great place to set side dishes, like corn on the cob or asparagus, as your meat cooks. It also has a side table with plenty of space for salads, condiments and your cooking tools.
You can convert this propane grill to run off your home's natural gas line. The conversion kit is sold separately, along with detailed instructions on how to set it up.
The burners are made of durable stainless steel and come with a limited 10-year warranty. The firebox, lid, cooking grates and emitters all have a two-year warranty, and all other parts are insured for a year. You can contact customer support by phone or the email contact form on the company's website. There is also a troubleshooting page on the Char-Broil website that answers many FAQs.
The Char-Broil Stainless 463446017 is a spacious grill with stainless steel grates that do an average job of locking in heat. However, like other fast-heating grills we tested, it doesn't retain heat as well or cook quite as evenly as some of the top-rated gas grills that require a little more patience. Nonetheless, this is a nice, affordable grill with plenty of cooking space that effectively cooks all types of meat for large crowds.
