Pros / The probe is waterproof, shatterproof and coated in a special agent to withstand regular cleaning.
Cons / Its average response time in our tests was lengthy – nearly 20 seconds.
Verdict / The CDN ProAccurate Thermometer DTQ450X is a durable meat thermometer designed to withstand the rigors of regular use.
Whether you are roasting a turkey or grilling a steak, the CDN ProAccurate Thermometer DTQ450X is a reliable meat thermometer. Although our tests showed it can take a relatively long time to settle on a temperature reading – as much as 20 seconds – it offers a high level of accuracy and reliability.
The manufacturer states this food thermometer gives you a response time of only six seconds, which is double the time for higher-ranked models. However, the response time most manufacturers publish measures only the time it takes to get an initial reading that reflects only a percentage of the actual temperature of the meat. Based on our testing, it took an average of nearly 20 seconds to get a full temperature reading. Should you prefer faster results, you might want to examine the EatSmart Precision Elite Thermocouple.
However, we appreciated that this model measures temperatures accurately to within 2 degrees Fahrenheit. It can also manage a broad range of temperature readings (between -40 and 450 degrees Fahrenheit), and the temperature is viewable in either Fahrenheit or Celsius. This thermometer's display isn't quite as easy to read as others – its numbers are just under a half-inch tall and the screen is not backlit, but this made for only minor inconvenience.
Its waterproof and shatterproof construction makes it one of the most durable meat thermometers we examined. The probe is coated with BioCote, which helps keep the thermometer sanitary and lowers the likelihood of cross-contamination between the foods you are cooking. Cleaning the thermometer between uses is still recommended, and the device’s design allows it to withstand regular cleaning.
We also liked how easy it was to recalibrate this thermometer. All thermometers of this type slowly go out of calibration over time, which means you should make a habit of regularly calibrating the device. The CDN ProAccurate thermometer includes a simple self-calibration feature that involves placing the thermometer's metal probe in ice water and pushing a single button.
This digital meat thermometer includes a plastic sheath for storage, with a pocket clip for even greater portability. A printed temperature guide on the sheath is a handy reference regarding the proper cooking temperatures of different meats. In addition, the stainless-steel design and 5-inch stem make it great for measuring thick cuts of meat. The device is covered by a five-year warranty, which is the longest we found among the products we tested.
