Pros / It has a large, backlit digital display, making temperatures easy to read.
Cons / Batteries are not included with the device.
Verdict / The EatSmart Precision Elite Thermocouple is simple to use and provides accurate readings relatively quickly, making it a solid option.
The EatSmart Precision Elite Thermocouple meat thermometer is equipped with a high-quality probe that achieves final readouts relatively quickly. Our testing also showed it performs with great accuracy, and the large digital display makes for easily visible readings. However, unlike other models we reviewed, it doesn't come with the batteries required for use.
This food thermometer is designed for convenient and simple use. Its 1.5-inch backlit digital display stood out; backlighting is a feature we wish more thermometers had. Most displays are typically two-thirds to half as large, which means the readout is far less legible. To turn the device on or off, you simply fold the probe in or out. It also has buttons for holding the current temperature, recalibrating the probe and switching between Celsius and Fahrenheit.
This instant-read meat thermometer achieves its initial estimate in three seconds or less. In our tests it typically took us just under nine seconds to get a final, accurate readout. Many models took as long as 15 to 20 seconds to deliver a full temperature reading.
If you want a meat thermometer that works faster, try the ThermoWork Thermapen Mk4.
The temperature accuracy rating for this device is among the best we’ve seen, with a variance of only plus or minus one degree for temperatures between 14 and 212 degrees Fahrenheit, though it can read heat levels between -40 and 572 degrees Fahrenheit with only a little loss of accuracy.
This digital meat thermometer comes with a simple fabric carrying case for portability and protection between uses. It is one of two products we tested that doesn't include any batteries. However, it uses AAA batteries, which are more commonly found around households than the coin batteries used in other devices. Still, this becomes an added hassle for something that is ordinarily ready to use right out of the box.
The EatSmart Precision Elite Thermocouple meat thermometer combines convenience with simplicity. The probe’s fold-out powering feature and large digital display make using the device a relatively quick and easy task. While it's not the fastest model we tested, it provides full readouts relatively quickly. All of this makes it a useable and useful addition to your kitchen supplies.
