Pros / This can be used as either a freestanding or built-in wine cooler.
Cons / It is a single-zone cooler.
Verdict / The NutriChef PKTEWC18 is the best wine cooler because it is energy efficient, has a decent temperature range and holds a good-sized wine collection.
The NutriChef PKTEWC18 is our top pick because it is energy efficient and maintains a good inside temperature. This wine cooler has a thermoelectric cooling system, which uses much less electricity to run than compressor models and can be set to chill wines between 64 and 53 degrees Fahrenheit. This is perfect for red wines and decent for most white wines, though not cold enough for sparkling wines. If you’d prefer a model that chills wines at a colder temperature, check out the Avanti EWC1201 that can be set 5 degrees lower.
This wine refrigerator is compact, about as tall as a dishwasher and half the length. But it still holds 18 standard bottles. There are several metal racks that hold bottles lying down, but there is a designated rack that will hold a few bottles upright. This is especially useful for opened bottles. If you have an exceptionally wide or tall bottle of wine, the racks of the NutriChef PKTEWC18 can be removed so they will fit inside.
This wine cooler has digital controls located at the top of the tempered glass door. It displays temperatures in either Fahrenheit or Celsius and has a switch to turn on the inside light, so you can see what’s inside without opening the door. It also has a digital locking system to help keep little kids out of the wines. However, smart teens will likely be able to figure it out. The biggest drawback of this wine fridge is it’s a single zone cooler, so it can only chill one type of wine at a time.
The outside of this NutriChef wine cooler has a beautiful platinum finish, and though it is a thermoelectric unit, it is designed to be used one of three ways: as a freestanding unit, built into a cabinet or slid under a counter. The only other wine cooler we reviewed that is both freestanding and a built-in is the Kalamera KRC30SZB, but it is a compression unit and costs much, much more.
The NutriChef PKTEWC18 is our favorite wine cooler because it is energy efficient, can be used as either a built-in or freestanding unit, holds 18 bottles of wine and has a decent temperature range. It doesn’t have two separately controlled cooling areas and doesn’t cool low enough for sparkling wines, but it’s a good choice for chilling reds or whites.
