TurboFloorPlan Home & Landscape Deluxe 2019: What you need to know
TurboFloorPlan Home & Landscape Deluxe 2019 comes from TurboCAD, which has been making computer aided design apps since the 1980s. It’s safe to say they know a thing or two about making high quality CAD apps, and TurboFloorPlan Home & Landscape Deluxe 2019 is a very polished product that brings all that expertise into a more focused and friendly app. Available on Windows and Mac.
TurboFloorPlan Home & Landscape Deluxe 2019: Features
Where other home design apps tend to offer a standard and a Pro version, this line-up starts with Deluxe; the slightly more powerful Pro version is twice the price. On Windows there's also a more modest version called Instant Architect. The app includes 100 how-to videos to get you started, and it's definitely worth checking them out before plonking down $39.99 on the tutorial eBook: we're sure it's brilliant but it nearly doubles the price of the app, and the quality of the tutorial videos is very good.
The differences between Deluxe and Pro aren't dramatic. On Windows the Deluxe version lacks some of the more advanced door options and the 3D cutaway tool, it limits you to 4 floors compared to Pro's 6 and it lacks some of the color palettes, plants and garden borders of the Pro version. But in terms of getting your ideas down on electronic paper, the important stuff is all here.
While TurboFloorPlan Home & Landscape Deluxe 2019 is powerful enough for designing complex buildings, it's also very easy to get to grips with thanks to its handy QuickStart feature. This gives you a selection of pre-designed rooms that you can drag and drop to arrange them however you place, and you can then start changing them to suit your particular requirements. The app also includes more than 40 editable sample plans, and you can import a photo of your own plans (via SketchUp) and then build your new design around that.
The drawing tools here are very good and make it easy to get items to fit to precise dimensions. There are nice touches such as the ability to create, save and apply drawing style profiles that you can reuse across multiple objects. You can design in color or grayscale, and you can customise pretty much anything from text labels to lines. There's also a format painter that works just like the one in your favorite word processing app: select the thing you want to use to paint a style and the brush will automatically apply it to whatever you brush with it. We particularly like the image editor-style tools for matching object sizes, distributing multiple objects equally and aligning objects horizontally or vertically: if you're familiar with apps such as Illustrator you'll find yourself very much at home here.
As you'd expect from a home design app, TurboFloorPlan Home & Landscape Deluxe 2019 provides an extensive library of pre-defined objects and symbols that you can drag and drop into your design and manipulate to get them just right. You can also import photographs and use them as materials, and you can annotate your plans (with customisable text styles) to indicate 'before and after' changes.
If you're worried about your environmental footprint or just don't want to end up paying through the nose to light, heat or cool your new home, you'll love the Build Green tool. It's designed to help you create a more sustainable home, with a library of more environmentally friendly objects such as recycled glass surfaces, bamboo flooring and so on. Build Green won't magically turn an environmental horror into a hero, but it can help you reduce some of the impact of your project.
TurboFloorPlan Home & Landscape Deluxe 2019 is pretty good at the green stuff more generally, as it includes a good selection of landscaping tools that you can use to plan yards, gardens, decks and other outdoor spaces. The app includes a good selection of professionally designed planting templates featuring multiple plants in pleasing combinations, and the Visual Array Tool enables you to populate paths with plants or other objects at pre-defined intervals.
One of the most useful features in TurboFloorPlan Home & Landscape Deluxe 2019 is its cost estimator. This adds up all the items such as building materials, doors and windows in your design and gives you an estimate of how much it's all going to cost, and the calculations automatically change if you go back into the plan and start changing sizes, rejigging layouts or adding more or more complex windows and doors.
The app enables you to see your designs in various ways. In addition to the 2D view, there's a dollhouse view that shows you what the design would look like without a roof and a really nice 3D view that uses natural sunlight, shadows and ambient light to create a realistic-looking impression of how your design will actually look in real life. Unlike some rivals there's no wireframe or 'glass house' view to allow you to see through walls, although in 2D mode you can see the shadowy outlines of other floors so you can see how everything fits together. You can work in 2D and 3D at the same time, and you can export in DWG/DXF format (including AutoCAD 2018) for sharing with other parties.
Should you buy the TurboFloorPlan Home & Landscape Deluxe?

Powerful enough for serious projects but simple enough for even beginners to get to grips with quickly, TurboFloorPlan Home & Landscape Deluxe 2019 is very good value for money.
