Pros / These speakers make movie dialogue sound natural.

Cons / The low frequencies sounded distorted in our music test.

Verdict / The ELAC Debut F5 accurately reproduce midrange and high frequencies, but their small low-frequency drivers mean you need to be pair them with a separate subwoofer to get a theater-quality sound experience.

The ELAC Debut F5 are a pair of three-way floor standing speakers that feature two 5.25-inch low-frequency drivers, one 5.25-inch midrange driver and a 1-inch cloth dome tweeter. World-renowned speaker designer Andrew Jones did a great job engineering an elegant set of speakers at a price that may make you reconsider purchasing a sound bar for your home theater.

During our movie test, we asked a panel of reviewers to rank the sound quality of the dialogue in a clip from “Mad Max: Fury Road.” The best floor standing speakers project dialogue loud enough that it doesn’t get drowned out by special effects. We found that the ELAC towers’ midrange and treble accuracy make them some the best for dialogue quality – they projected smooth and balanced dialogue during the loud chase scenes in our movie test.

Movie dialogue is important, but to get a true theater experience, you also need to feel the rumble of bass frequencies, especially when watching action movies. The F5 towers struggled to project bass in our test and fell short of the other speakers we reviewed – the 5.25-inch low-frequency drivers distorted sound during some of the louder chase scenes. We suggest pairing these speakers with a subwoofer for theater-quality bass response.

During our music test, the F5 towers again delivered smooth and accurate treble and midrange content. We were particularly impressed with the tonal quality of brass and woodwind instruments when we listened to selections from Karl Denson’s album “Dance Lesson #2.” When our panel of evaluators rated vocal reproduction quality during our music test, the F5 ranked among the best in our review.

ELAC offers a three-year warranty, which is below average. However, if you pair floor standing speakers with the proper amount of amplification, you shouldn’t need to use the factory warranty.

Summary

The ELAC Debut F5 did a good job delivering smooth and natural sounding vocal and dialogue content. This speaker series includes a subwoofer, and you should consider adding it or another model to fill up the low-frequency range – especially if you plan on watching action movies or listening to bass-heavy music.
