KitchenAid KRSF505ESS

With nearly 25 cubic feet of total storage space, the KitchenAid KRSF505ESS has one of the largest capacities of any side-by-side refrigerator we reviewed. Its dimensions – 69 inches high and about 36 inches wide – are smaller than other fridges with similar capacity because it makes great use of its space.
This refrigerator is Energy Star-compliant and costs less to run, per square foot, than any fridge in our lineup, including fridges with larger capacities, because of its efficiency. The refrigerator section has four shelves with spill-proof design to keep messes from spilling to other parts of the fridge. The shelves are not adjustable, however, which limits your ability to customize the space. Still, they are spaced in a way that creates plenty of room for all shapes and sizes of containers. There are three drawers – one large deli-drawer and two humidity- and temperature-controlled crispers – which are great for storing fruit and vegetables. The freezer has four shelves, two drawers and three door bins. The icemaker and ice bin are housed in the freezer door. It lacks such extras as quick cool and quick freeze, which quickly restore temperature after losing cool air. This KitchenAid refrigerator has a freezer-side water and ice dispenser with a lockout feature that lets you control when it dispenses water and ice. You can also control how much water it dispenses to prevent spillover. Inside the freezer door are temperature controls for different sections of the fridge and freezer. From the control panel you can set a door alarm to sound if the door is left open, which is another nice energy-saving feature. This refrigerator has stainless steel, black and white color options to match your kitchen, which is more than most side-by-side refrigerators offer.
Pros
  • This fridge uses less energy per cubic foot than others we reviewed.
  • Two of the drawers are humidity- and temperature-controlled crispers for keeping fruits and vegetables fresh.
  • It has stainless steel, black and white color options for different décor.
Cons
  • The shelves are not adjustable.
  • It lacks quick cool and quick freeze features.
  • It doesn’t have a door-in-door feature to give you quick access to regular snack items.

LG LSXC22386S

The LG LSXC22386S is a side-by-side refrigerator that has lot of versatile storage space. Its total refrigerator and freezer space of about 22 cubic feet is average, but it makes good use of its space.
It has four adjustable shelves so you can create plenty of space for big items. It has two drawers, but neither of them is humidity- or temperature-controlled. This refrigerator has an uncommon door-in-door feature which lets you quickly access cold snacks, milk and other drinks without having to open the full door, which saves energy by limiting the amount of cold air that escapes. When you combine the bins inside the refrigerator with the door-in-door storage, there are a total of nine bins, which gives you plenty of storage for items you want to access easily. This side-by-side refrigerator is one of only four models in our comparison that are Energy Star certified, and it costs less to run than most refrigerators we reviewed. The freezer compartment’s two clear drawers make it easy to see their contents. It has three shelves and three door bins. The icemaker is in the freezer door, making it easy to access. It also has convenient spill-proof shelves. This refrigerator has touch controls that include a lockout feature so you can decide who can use the ice dispenser and when. You can set an alarm to let you know when the door has been left open. The fridge comes in two colors, stainless steel and black, to help you match your other appliances and decor. It comes with a standard one-year parts and labor warranty and a generous extended seven-year warranty. This gives you something to fall back on if anything goes wrong with the cooling system in that time.
Pros
  • The fridge features a door-in-door design for easy access to popular items.
  • It has adjustable shelves.
  • It has a generous seven-year extended warranty for the cooling system.
Cons
  • There is no humidity-control drawer.
  • There is no temperature-control drawer.
  • It only has two drawers and no slide-out shelves.

Best for Big Families

Frigidaire FPSS2677RF

The Frigidaire FPSS2677RF’s standout feature is its storage space. It has plenty of grocery space for a big family with 25.6 cubic feet of interior space. Plus, it is decently conservative in its energy use and received and overall score of 85 percent for efficiency.
It has 12.87 cubic feet of refrigerator space. The fridge includes three drawers that feature a humidity-controlled crisper drawer for keeping fruits and vegetables fresh, but there is no temperature-controlled drawer. The shelves are adjustable and the five door bins are big enough to hold milk jugs and gallon-sized containers. This unit has 9 cubic feet of freezer space. Three of the four freezer shelves are adjustable so you can customize them to fit bulky items. The freezer space has two unique drawers – one is an open bin without a top and the other is a wire basket that slides out. The freezer door houses the icemaker and water dispenser. The refrigerator controls are located on the side of the same door. The controls include a lockout feature so you can decide when guests or children have access to the water dispenser. The control panel lets you know when the air and water filters need to be replaced and shows the internal temperature of both the freezer and refrigerator. A door alarm will sound if the door has been left open too long, which is a good energy-saving feature. This fridge comes with a one-year warranty for parts and labor, but there is no extended warranty for the cooling system like most refrigerators have. This is an unfortunate omission that makes the purchase riskier than it would otherwise be.
Pros
  • It has the largest capacity of any refrigerator in our lineup.
  • A door alarm lets you know if a door has been open too long.
  • The fridge and freezer both have adjustable shelves.
Cons
  • There is no extended warranty with this unit.
  • There is no temperature-controlled drawer.
  • The refrigerator has no rack for bottles and cans.

Why Trust Us

Since we started reviewing side-by-side refrigerators in 2011, we have done a lot of research to find the best units available. Just in the last year we spent more than 115 hours researching. We evaluated 20 refrigerators, which we narrowed down to the 10 best to include in our lineup. We did extensive online research, comparing product pages and looking for specific standout features in different models.

We went to stores that had these models to look at them closely, test capacities and get store representatives’ opinions about the best models and best features. As questions arose during research we contacted manufactures to get answers. We reached out to other professionals and industry insiders to broaden our perspective and understanding with their expertise. Our in-depth research is reflected in our comparison chart and detailed in our reviews to help you make an informed decision about the best side-by-side refrigerator for you.

How We Researched and Evaluated

When considering side-by-side refrigerators, we looked for the standard features and options, such as adjustable shelves and a water and ice dispenser. We also examined some features that are useful bonuses, such as temperature- or humidity-controlled drawers and space-saving icemakers.

We also checked the flexibility that you get from the refrigerator's design and the adaptability of the interior space. Although there is always a set amount of space in each refrigerator, its capacity can be expanded in a sense if you get a number of adjustable shelves and different sizes of bins. Adjustable shelves are important so you can accommodate large and tall containers. Many models include humidity-controlled crisper drawers, and some include temperature-controlled drawers. Some side-by-side refrigerators also include a deli or snack drawer for smaller items, and a few models include a can or wine rack for beverages.

Energy use was another important consideration in our evaluations since fridges operate night and day, seven days a week. The best side-by-side refrigerators are Energy Star compliant, which means they meet certain requirements that make them energy-efficient and therefore less costly to operate. The annual cost of running the fridges in our comparison ranges from $54 to $89.

Only four models in our lineup are Energy Star compliant, and this could make a difference in your electricity bill. This might seem small at first, but since you will probably keep a refrigerator for years, the energy-efficiency differences add up. Some models offer a door-in-door feature that is nice for energy conservation since you can access common foods without opening the full door.

What Else Is Important to Look for in Side-by-Side Refrigerators

Certain less crucial items might seem like a luxury to one person but could be a deal-breaker for another. Among other things, we examined these features:

Conveniences
The water and ice dispenser is a helpful feature. All the models in our review include one mounted on the exterior of the freezer door, providing crushed or cubed ice as well as filtered water. On the inside, the icemaker may be mounted above the shelving area, which means it extends into the freezer compartment and uses up some of that storage space. Conversely, it could be contained in the door, which gives you more freezer storage space. In addition, we looked for such things as a door-ajar alarm to warn you if you forget to close the doors, a quick-cool feature to pump extra cold air when it is needed, and spill-proof shelves that are easy to clean.

Warranty & Support
All manufacturers offer a warranty on their appliances, but not all warranties are created equal. The bare minimum in warranties covers parts and labor for one year. Many manufacturers offer an additional warranty on the sealed system, including the compressor. Five- to seven-year warranties are common, and a 10-year warranty on the sealed system is excellent.

Refrigerators are not generally appliances you need much help with, but it is good to know that the manufacturer offers support when you need it. Online access to a user guide and knowledgebase or FAQs page is helpful when you have questions. Every company has a telephone or email option so you can contact customer service, and some have live text chat.
