This laser line level is self-leveling, which means you don't have to spend time tediously adjusting the level to make sure it is perfectly level. The tool uses an internal pendulum to ascertain true plumb and level lines, which is highly accurate and efficient. You can place the tool itself up to approximately four degrees out of level without affecting the accuracy of the laser line. However, during our testing, we found the level could be placed up to five degrees out of level without it affecting the accuracy of the laser lines. Once the level is out of its self-leveling range, the lasers blink repeatedly, indicating that they are out of level and need to be adjusted.
If you bump or move the level, it only takes about three seconds for it to adjust back to normal. Unfortunately, you can't manually lock the pendulum in place to project an out-of-level line, which would be useful when you hang pictures up a staircase at a specific angle.
This laser line level is built to project a line up to 50 feet away, which is better than many of the other line lasers we reviewed. It's important to note that the level retains a high level of accuracy at 30 feet but starts to suffer the further away you move it from the wall. At 30 feet, the laser line is sharp and crisp against the wall and is accurate within 1/8 of an inch, which is impressive. However, at 50 feet in our testing, the line became blurry and did not retain its height accuracy, which is to be expected with all laser line levels.
The DeWALT DW088K projects the horizontal line at 130 degrees, meaning you only need to set the level up once to have it project against an entire wall or surface. This DeWALT level can project both vertical and horizontal lines at the same time, creating a cross-line laser, or individually so you can focus on just one line at a time.
This cross-line laser level is made out of durable material that can handle some abuse without compromising the integrity of the tool. The overmolded housing protects the internal pendulum and sensitive lasers from dust, dirt and other objects. The body is made from rugged rubber and durable plastic, so it can take some wear and tear without too much issue. That being said, this level does not have a locking pendulum, meaning a harsh fall or other abuse can permanently damage the tool.
This DeWALT level has a built-in magnetic swivel, which allows you to attach the tool to a metal surface to project a line. The magnets are powerful, so you don't have to worry about the level falling off a surface and damaging the tool. The level also has standard quarter-inch tripod threading on the base, which allows you to use the level virtually anywhere and is incredibly easy to set up. The level also includes a mount that you can attach to a wall with a nail or screw, which can be very useful if you are remodeling a room and don't mind putting a small hole in the wall.
The level uses three AA batteries that are included with the tool. These batteries should last for approximately 20 hours, which is the longest time out of all the levels we reviewed. Therefore, you don't have to worry about your level dying on you in the middle of a project or having to constantly switch out batteries.
