The Hammerhead HLCL01 Compact Self-Leveling Cross Line Laser is a great tool that you can use in a number of situations for a variety of projects. The tool, as the name suggests, is self-leveling, so you don't have to spend meticulous time finding a perfect level or plumb line. Overall, the tool ranks among the best laser line levels, but it isn't as competitive as the very best in certain areas, such as accuracy ratings and projection capabilities.
This self-leveling laser line level uses an internal pendulum to make sure the tool produces a perfectly level or plumb line. Because of this, you can place the tool itself approximately four degrees out of level and the pendulum adjusts the difference. As soon as you set the laser up, or if you bump it, the level takes approximately five seconds to settle into position. If the level is placed outside the four-degree range, an LED at the top of the unit turns red and the laser flashes repeatedly, so you'll know it needs to be adjusted. You can lock the pendulum in place so you can project a line out of level when needed.
The laser line level has a working range of 30 feet with an accuracy rating of a quarter inch. This distance and accuracy rating is not the best out of the laser line levels we reviewed, but it is still very effective. During our testing process, we found that this laser line level produces a line at 110 degrees, which is rather wide, meaning you can project a line across an entire wall or two walls. This feature is especially useful when you want to hang pictures at the same height on two or more walls.
The HLCL01 requires two AA batteries that are included with the tool, and they give you approximately 15 hours of continuous use. This battery life is impressive and ensures that you don't have to constantly replace the batteries or worry about the level dying on you mid-project. The level comes with an adjustable clamp that you attach to the tool with standard quarter-inch tripod threading. This means you can use most camera tripods with the tool, which is very useful.
The company offers a three-year limited warranty, which is the longest warranty time we found in laser line levels. If you run into any trouble with the product, you can download an online user manual or check out the FAQs section to see if any of your questions have already been answered. You can also contact the company through email or over the phone. Unfortunately, the company does not offer live chat support.
While this laser line level is a good choice, it wasn't our top pick. That honor went to DeWalt DW088K.
