Agnitum Ltd. publishes a firewall and an antivirus product. Or you can combine both in its Outpost Security Suite Pro and gain a few security features that Outpost Antivirus does not include but are to be expected among the best internet security suites. In terms of performance, there are no AV-Test results. However, Outpost has earned VB100 awards for five years in a row, most recently on Windows 8.1 in August 2014. In the most recent VB100 reactive and proactive tests Outpost achieved an 85.6 percent malware detection success rate and demonstrated negligible performance slowdown of the host computer.

Although a majority of the best internet security publishers continue to include a proprietary firewall in the internet security suite product category, the firewall native to Windows has evolved into something so effective that it fuels arguments about whether software publishers should continue to create third-party firewalls at all. But the firewall technology that Agnitum includes with the Outpost Security Suite Pro is unusually good – so good, in fact, that some of the best security software publishers outsource elements of Agnitum’s firewall-engine technology. Whether you use Agnitum’s firewall or the Windows firewall, the role of a firewall as it cooperates with an internet security suite is to keep the main ports shut to prevent unsafe connections, to allow you to hide your PC from view over the internet, to isolate any successful malware intrusions by not allowing them to “phone home,” and to prevent data leaks that might give away private information.

In addition to the firewall, Outpost Security Suite Pro includes an extensive list of key security components. For example, to prevent malware infiltration, Outpost scans the system and application files for threats. It also scans email attachments and web pages to check for viruses. Another source of infections that it monitors is removable storage media such as USB memory sticks. You can create a bootable rescue CD that will help you to recover from catastrophic infections. Outpost is missing a few features that some internet security suites have: a virtual keyboard to combat keyloggers, an online backup utility and a file shredder.

Outpost Security Suite Pro has proven its effectiveness at preventing malware in tests conducted at a respected independent software lab, Virus Bulletin. It has not been tested at AV-Test labs, however. The Outpost feature list includes important functions such as a firewall and a webpage scanner. Unless you insist on an online backup utility or a file shredder, Outpost Security Suite Pro is certainly a product to consider.
