Shopping the holiday sales can feel overwhelming if you're looking to make a big purchase, especially when it comes to your sleep health, but our 5 golden rules of buying a mattress (opens in new tab) during the Black Friday online 2020 sales will hopefully give you a gentle nudge in the right direction. After all, choosing a mattress is a big deal, and with so many to pick from, how do you know which one is right for you? The bigger question is, how do you know you're getting a good deal?

We recommend buying from reputable sleep brands that offer a strong returns policy and a decent trial period so you can test-drive your new bed at home. The good news is that many top sleep brands are offering impressive Black Friday bargains right now. But before you spend a dime, let's go over these five golden rules of buying a mattress during the Black Friday online 2020 sales...

1: Always check the RRP

Black Friday deals can sometimes be misleading, and with sales happening so often it can be hard to know if the product you’re after is being offered at a good price. That's why it's important to always check the RRP to see what the mattress is selling for outside of any promotional periods, and, if the mattress is sold elsewhere too, compare prices across multiple sites to get the best deal.

Also, take all those ‘last chance' banners with a pinch of salt. There are plenty of mattress sales throughout the year, so don’t panic buy if you can't afford your ideal bed right now because, chances are, a good deal will come around again.

2: Shop for your body type and sleep style

Whether you’re a side, back, or stomach sleeper, your height, body weight and your ideal mattress firmness are big factors to consider when investing in a new mattress. A medium-firm mattress is a great choice if you want plenty of spine and neck support, or you weigh over 300lbs. For side sleepers, a softer mattress like the Leesa Original (opens in new tab) is a great choice, as it will mold to your body’s natural curvature.

If you have back pain, try the Classic Mattress (opens in new tab) by Saatva, which uses lumbar zone technology for optimal spine support and back comfort. Hot sleepers, head for the Purple Original (opens in new tab), with its 1,800 built-in air channels and breathable foam to airflow. Health conditions such as the menopause and night sweats can lead you to you overheating in bed, so a cooling mattress (opens in new tab) could be your ticket to better sleep.

3: Set a budget and don't blow it

Even the canniest of shoppers can get caught up in all the Black Friday madness, and before you know it you’ve blown your budget on a luxury mattress when a more affordable model would have suited your sleep needs just fine. Rather than buying the most expensive mattress just because it has the biggest discount, set a budget before you shop and try sticking to it.

4: Consider at least two alternative mattresses

Don’t be afraid to shop around before you buy. Check out other mattress providers and see if you can get a similar design, features and performance at a cheaper price. Many of the best cooling mattress (opens in new tab) brands, for example, offer similar features, but the prices vary wildly. You may find that you can get an almost identical mattress to the one you originally wanted at a cheaper price, especially during Black Friday.

5: Check the trial period and returns policy

When choosing a mattress, always make sure that it comes with a decent trial period and a returns policy. One of our favorites for  trial periods is the Nectar Mattress (opens in new tab) that comes with a 365-night trial, you can’t get more generous than that! Decent trial periods of 30 days or more give you time to decide whether the mattress you’ve chosen suits your sleep style and firmness preferences. It’s especially important to get a lengthy trial period when you’re buying online and haven’t had a chance to lie down on the mattress and test it out like you would in store.
