Introduced in 2017, the Arlo Pro 2 is still one of the best wireless security cameras around. Now, the company has announced a major update to the range in the form of the Arlo Pro 3. The early signs suggest it's just as impressive an offering.

The Pro 3 features a number of upgraded specs compared to its predecessor, with the most headline grabbing being the jump to 2K video recording (2560p).

By way of comparison, the Pro 2 shoots in Full HD (1080p), with the improved resolution standing to make it easier to see who's at the door – and in worst case scenarios, help the police to identify intruders.

As well as sharper video footage, the Pro 3 offers more expansive coverage thanks to its 160-degree field of view. This is a sizeable bump on the Pro 2's 130-degree lens and means it will be easier to keep an eye on not only on visitors but kids, pets, and deliveries.

Further improvements include the addition of an integrated spotlight, two-way mic, and larger battery which Arlo says is capable of lasting up to six months on a single charge.

And like the Pro 2, the Arlo Pro 3 is graded as IP65 water and dust resistant, so it will also be a contender for best outdoor security camera once we've tested it fully.

Color us surprised?

One new feature we're particularly looking forward to trying is the Pro 3's color night vision mode.

Nocturnal security cam footage is typically black and white, but Arlo algorithms allow the camera to cut through the darkness and reveal the color of things like cars and clothing.

It might sound pessimistic, but these are the kind of details that can help law enforcement identify and catch burglars more quickly, before they can strike again.

In addition to color night vision, the Pro 3 is HDR-enabled, which helps you glean more information from the darkest and brightest parts of an image.

Both of these are features that have trickled down from the excellent Arlo Ultra, which is the brand's top of the range 4K wireless security camera.

Arlo Pro 3 price and release date

With pricing starting at just $199.99 for a single camera, the Pro 3 sits just below the Ultra in the firm's indoor/outdoor security camera line-up – though those new to the Arlo ecosystem may find an Arlo Pro 3 starter kit a more useful jumping off point.

It's priced at $499.99/$699.99/$1,099.99 for a package featuring two, four and six cameras, respectively, as well as an Arlo SmartHub. This is required to network the cameras to your router. It's essentially a new version of the Arlo Base Station, which costs $79.99 on a standalone basis.

Also bundled are wall mounts, batteries, cables, a three month free Arlo Smart trial and everything else you need to get started.

Pre-orders for the Arlo Pro 3 are now live on Best Buy in black and white color options, with the retailer touting an expected release date of October 2.
