Avocado Green is an award-winning sleep company dedicated to producing eco-friendly beds and bedding, and the eponymously named Avocado Green Mattress is a superb place to start if you’re new to this brand. Routinely singled-out as one of the best mattress online companies for organic materials, Avocado Green has two clear missions: first, to help you sleep well, night after night.

Second, it aims to have as little impact on the planet as possible while producing its luxury sleep goodies. In fact, Avocado Green is the first mattress brand to be Climate Neutral Certified and to achieve net-zero carbon emissions, after becoming carbon negative last year.

As we’ll cover in detail throughout our Avocado Green Mattress review, this beauty is made in the US with 100% organic materials, including wool and cotton, some of which are found in the brand's best pillows and bed toppers for instant comfort. The mattress also contains a layer of organic latex for a surface that's firmer while offering minimum motion transfer, which is good news for couples where one of you wriggles around during sleep.

Avocado Green Mattress review: Design

With its triple-layered construction – coil base, a three-inch layer of natural latex, and organic cotton-and-wool top layer – the Avocado Green mattress strives for plenty of firmness, cosiness and breathability. If you wanted extra comfort, you're a dedicated side sleeper add the pillow top, but that will cost you a cool $300 extra.

Elsewhere, 1,414 independently floating coils have been arranged in five ergonomic zones to provide targeted support and alignment for your body, which is good news for your neck and spine. All of this also keeps motion-transfer to a minimum, so you shouldn’t be so easily disturbed by your partner tossing and turning during the night. Other benefits include ease around your main pressure points when you lie down, which is good news if you experience neck, back or shoulder pain.

Finally, the Avocado Green Mattress is needle-tufted. This is a traditional yet functional technique that involves pulling ribbons through the mattress to bind the layers together without the need for toxic adhesives. This method not only ensures the mattress is durable, but it’s also typical of the care Avocado takes in the manufacture of its beds.

Avocado Green Mattress review: Features

There are plenty of features here to help ensure the Avocado Green Mattress is reliable from start to finish. For example, if you’ve been eyeing up the best cooling mattress because you sleep hot, the cooling layer of cotton and wool used here should see you right, with a natural feel to keep you comfy through the seasons. The natural latex used should also offer plenty of cooling comfort, especially when compared to memory foam beds, some of which are notorious for heat buildup.

As a nice finishing touch, there are also four high-quality, heavy-duty handles to make moving a breeze. The handles lay flat against the mattress and are securely attached to take the weight. All the materials used are non-toxic and hypoallergenic, with the organic latex and wool used in the mattress sourced from Avocado’s own sustainable farms. Furthermore, because the mattress is 100%biodegradable, it won’t end up in landfill. Read our guide on how to dispose of a mattress to see if your old one can be donated to charity.

Avocado Green Mattress review: User reviews

There’s plenty of good feedback on Avocado’s site, with positive user reviews focused on pain relief and comfort. More negative reviews mention the occasional instance of slow delivery by Avocado, and how the company asked some customers to wait at least 30 days before returning the mattress. While some raved about the plush comfort and support on offer, others complained that it was too firm. This goes to show how subjective mattresses are, and why there isn’t a perfect one for everybody.

The most recent positive user review stated: ‘Our previous mattress was giving me back, shoulder, and hip pain. Since the Avocado arrived, I've had no hip or back pain.' Before adding, 'I am a side sleeper and need a bit of cushioning for my shoulder. Wonderful product! Worth the cost and wait.’

The most recent negative user review stated: ‘We have had our mattress for about 5 weeks, and haven't slept much in that time. The mattress is extremely firm and simply just not comfortable. It's also still a couple inches too narrow for our bed frame. We have been trying to set up a return, but at 3 weeks after we received it, customer service told us we had to wait 30 days.’

In its review, SleepFoundation awarded Avocado high scores for edge support, temperature control and ease of movement. However, it only awarded 3 out of 5 stars for pressure relief, and recommended the additional pillow top should you require extra comfort around your hips or shoulders. We advised this earlier on in our review too.

Avocado Green Mattress review: Trial, shipping, refunds

If you’re considering buying an Avocado Green Mattress but are worried about the cost, you can try the mattress for 365 days risk-free to see if it suits you. Avocado advises you try it for at least 30 days before sending it back, to allow your body to adjust.

We discovered when looking through the user reviews that this 30-day minimum period annoyed some customers, but it’s a fairly common practice. As we explain in our roundup of the best Purple mattress deals and discounts, Purple asks customers to test out their new mattress for at least 30 days as this should give your body a better chance of getting used to your new mattress.

If you do decide the Avocado Green Mattress isn’t for you, contact Avocado to start the refund process, which includes arranging for the mattress to be donated to a verified charity. Note that the mattress must be in a suitable condition for return with no tears, stains or odors - we recommend reading the T&Cs before parting with your money.

Currently, Avocado currently only ships within the US, and delivery is free. Mattresses come rolled up and packaged in a protective box, which is easy to unpack but may require two people to carry and position it correctly. If you don’t fancy doing this, or you aren’t physically able, Avocado’s delivery team will schedule a delivery time within a four-hour window, then set up your mattress.

But the price of this is high at $249, especially when you consider that, as part of the best Saatva mattress discounts and deals, you can get the same ‘White Glove Delivery’ service for free. Avocado might also be able to remove your old mattress too, but check if this service is available in your area first.

The Avocado Green Mattress comes with a 25-year warranty, with full coverage in the first ten years and limited coverage thereafter. That’s impressive compared to other sleep brands, but we'd still recommend that you read the warranty details to see specifically what is and isn’t covered. For instance, normal decrease in firmness associated with regular use will not be covered, but manufacturing defects (such as cracked latex) will be.

Should you buy the Avocado Green Mattress?

If a good night’s sleep, enhanced comfort and a green planet are important to you, you should definitely consider the Avocado Green Mattress. The quality is top-notch, and the value excellent when you consider the care and attention that goes into making each one. The one-year trial period is also generous, and speaks to how much confidence Avocado has in its organic mattress.

However, if you prefer your mattresses on the softer side, adding the pillow top might suit you better, although the extra $300 for this might nudge the Avocado Green Mattress out of your budget. If that’s the case, look elsewhere (see our alternatives below).

Overall, we’d recommend the standard Avocado Green Mattress to anyone looking for high-quality eco-luxury without having to pay the earth (in more ways than one) for it.

Avocado Green Mattress: Top three alternatives

  • The Saatva Zenhaven, made from Talalay latex, is ideal if you’re looking for another toxin-free, all-natural option. It’s pricier though.
  • The Nectar Mattress offers similar levels of luxury medium-firm comfort at an affordable price.
  • The Purple Hybrid is great if you want the best of both worlds with foam and springs, plus the added benefit of cooling technology.

There are also factors outside of your bed that can help you sleep better, including the use of a sound machine for relaxing sleep sounds, or one of the best sunrise alarm clocks to strengthen your sleep-wake cycle. For further savings, take a look at the best Casper mattress deals and discounts
