1-800-PACK-RAT has a broad service range and container options for moves of all sizes. Price is about average though, and there are no substantial bargains.
We quoted moves for a local in-city move, a move of a few hundred miles and one of a couple thousand miles. In general, the pricing for each was around average, though the local moves were about $50 cheaper than average in our comparison. The quote for the mid-distance move was slightly more expensive than comparable moving companies. And the cross-country move was about average. While 1-800-PACK-RAT is broadly available, it doesn’t service every ZIP code, so make sure to call and confirm there is service in the area you’re moving to. This is one of the few services that explicitly require a deposit before the containers are dropped off.
As with all the companies we reviewed, you can store your container at a 1-800-PACK-RAT warehouse. The first month’s storage fee is included in the moving cost, but if you plan to store beyond that first month, there’s a monthly fee. The company has the most expensive storage fee of all the services we reviewed, nearly double that of U-Haul and U-Pack’s storage fees.
This service does offer a unique name your own price feature. You fill out a form with your contact info and the price you want to pay. An agent from 1-800-PACK-RAT then helps you figure out moving options that fit within your desired price range.
You can choose between three different container sizes: 8 feet, 12 feet and 16 feet. The best size for you depends on how much stuff you’re moving. An 8-foot container is a good choice for smaller apartments. A 16-foot is best for smaller houses or large apartments. Our quotes were for a 16-foot container, but you can expect lower prices for smaller containers.
1-800-PACK-RAT was also about average for container transit times. For longer moves it takes about 10 business days for your containers to arrive. For shorter moves, it takes two to four days depending on the distance. Should you need movers to help you load and unload, 1-800-PACK-RAT partners with third-party companies, but this service is an additional cost.
