Amazon Prints makes beautiful, good-quality photo books at the lowest prices we've seen. You can even get free standard shipping when ordering anything $15 or more, which makes it the perfect publishing choice if you want to make a book on a budget. However, this book publisher has fewer book sizes and background designs than many other companies. Since there are also fewer cover options with this service, it might not be a good choice for making a formal photo book.
Amazon Prints offers the cheapest photo books of any service we tested. A hardcover 8 x 8-inch book only costs $17.99 with 20 pages included. Amazon doesn’t charge shipping on orders that cost $15 or more so you won’t have to pay a shipping fee if you choose standard shipping. No other photo book company does this. This service does charge tax but that should only amount to a few dollars or less. When purchasing additional pages, you must order two at a time. It’s $1.00 for every two pages, which is half the price of most other services. Amazon does not offer bulk discounts at this time.
In our tests, Amazon Prints scored well for both photo and book quality. There are about 150 backgrounds available, fewer than we saw from other services, but they are all attractive so you are almost sure to find something you like. There are also a lot of sticker embellishments that you can use to personalize your books.
Amazon Prints only offers four different book sizes, so they might not carry the size you want. However, these sizes tend to be the most commonly ordered ones: 5 x 7, 8 x 8, 8 x 11 and 12 x 12. You can choose to have a hardbound, softbound or lay-flat cover, but there are no fancy cover options like leather or fabric materials. Additionally, these books do not come with a flyleaf. If you want a service with more cover and size options to choose from as well as better print quality, you’ll be interested in AdoramaPix.
The online interface Amazon Prints employs is one of easiest to use. There are a decent number of page layouts to choose from when designing a page. Unlike some other photo book companies, this one allows you to create your own layouts by simply placing images wherever you want and resizing them however you want. You can either choose to manually input your photos, or you can use the autofill feature to speed up the process.
This program uses Amazon Prime Photos to store your images. An aspect that we really like about Amazon Prints is the Family Vault. You can connect with up to five other Amazon Prints users to share photos, which means you will have a larger database of images to choose from for your photo book project. Unfortunately, you cannot share photo projects between the five accounts, only photos. Amazon Prints also lacks the ability to import images from social media sites. Granted, it isn't hard to download images onto your computer from places like Facebook and Instagram, but there are services that conveniently eliminate those extra steps.
If you are will to pay more and need your book in a hurry, Amazon Prints offers overnight shipping, as well as international shipping. Use the FAQs page or contact a customer representative through email, phone or live chat. Each time we used the live chat feature, our questions were answered quickly and respectfully.
Amazon Prints is a great option if you’re looking to design photo books on a budget. While there are fewer backgrounds and book types to choose from, the quality of the selection is impressive. In our testing, the photos printed well and the book was strongly made. Aside from the small choice of options, the biggest issue – which admittedly isn’t a deal breaker at all – is the inability to add photos to your projects from social media sites.
