The Definitive Technology W Studio Micro produced some of the most clear and accurate dialogue and vocals in our movie and music tests. That can be attributed to its dedicated center channel. This is the only sound bar we tested that has a 3.1 configuration (left, right, center and subwoofer). It also has the best subwoofer in our test group. The large enclosure that holds the 8-inch woofer is hard to hide among other decorations in your entertainment room, but it delivers accurate and floor-rumbling bass.
We surveyed a panel of fellow employees that range in audio experience from novice to audiophile. The W Studio Micro had some of the highest scores in the dialogue clarity portion of our survey. Dialogue quality and clarity are important attributes since sound effects can easily drown out the voices in movies and television shows if the sound bar has a weak surround algorithm. This model didn’t offer the best or widest stereo image, but that resulted in clear and intelligible voice reproduction in our music and movie tests.
Definitive Technology partnered with DTS to offer lossless, high-quality audio transmission over your home’s Wi-Fi network. To use this feature, you just have to download a free app. Bluetooth has a maximum range of around only 30 feet, but a Wi-Fi connection allows you to move freely around your house while transmitting better-than-CD-quality audio to the W Studio Micro.
While the sound bar’s wireless connectivity options are good, it’s missing important physical connections: HDMI inputs and outputs. However, that may not be a problem if you use your TV as the connection hub because you can send audio from your TV to the sound bar with the included optical cable.
This Definitive Technology sound bar has the best remote in our test group. Its layout is simple, and the buttons feel like they could be pressed hundreds of times without breaking. Using this remote, you can change the input source, sound bar volume and subwoofer volume as well as toggle between music and movie sound modes from more than 60 feet away.
The dedicated center channel in the W Studio Micro created clear and accurate vocal and dialogue reproduction. That makes this sound bar a good fit if you mainly watch TV shows and movies and are more concerned with hearing the words than outlying sound effects. This is one of the more expensive sound bars we tested, but the price is reflected in its high-quality aluminum enclosure, accurate subwoofer and quality remote control.
