Trend Micro Antivirus for Mac earned top scores for detecting and protecting against Mac malware and received and high score for detecting Windows threats on Mac computers. It’s a powerful antivirus program with a good number of protection tools and only a couple of quirks to figure out when using it.
When we downloaded our test file of Mac malware samples, Trend Micro was able to find and stop every threat. The program deleted several of the infected files from our system automatically, but the majority were placed in the quarantine folder for us to look through first. It took a little trial and error before we figured out how to securely delete everything in the quarantine folder. There is a small padlock icon at the bottom of the folder; you have to click this to unlock the folder so you can select and permanently delete the threats in quarantine.
Trend Micro Antivirus for Mac tagged and blocked 95 percent of the Windows malware we exposed on our Mac test computer. This means you will likely not pass on a Windows threats to other computers through file sharing.
This Mac security program automatically enables Safari safe browsing extensions when the program is installed. Chrome and Firefox extensions are automatically added to the browser, too, but you need to follow the in-browser prompts to turn them on. These browser extensions warn you if a website you’re trying to reach has a malicious link, download or phishing scheme. They also mark search results so you can tell if a site is safe to visit.
During virus scans we did see some slowdown of our computer, but it wasn’t enough to keep us from browsing the internet, checking email and watching videos. You can’t open the Trend Micro interface during scans, and it took longer to complete the scans than most security programs.
On top of excellent malware protection, Trend Micro Antivirus for Mac includes parental controls to keep tabs on what your children see while online. You can also set time limits for how long they can be online. Trend Micro also includes social media protections that check out posted links and files and lets you know if they lead to a dangerous site or malicious download. The only big security tool missing is a personal firewall. Most internet security programs include this, but Trend Micro Antivirus for Mac doesn’t. Your Mac operating system does come with one that does a decent job, but if you would like a second layer of protection, check out Norton Security Standard that protects just as well as Trend Micro and comes with a personal firewall.
There are help icons located throughout the Trend Micro dashboard to assist if you get stuck. These icons open help documents on the Trend Micro page. You must click through several layers of support pages to get to the FAQs. Eventually at the bottom of one of the pages is a link to support telephone numbers, email addresses and live chat. Telephone support is available during extended business hours, and you can purchase a premium service package and have access to 24/7 telephone support. Email responses take 24 to 48 hours, even with premium service.
Though it does cause a little slowdown and a few tools require some odd steps before you can use them, overall Trend Micro Antivirus for Mac is a great program for protecting your computer from malware and keep you from infecting other computers, too. It comes with parental controls and social media protections and is one of our top choices for Mac internet security.
