Advanced Encryption Package Pro 6.04 Review

Author by

PROS / This program compresses your files when it encrypts them, which saves you data space.

CONS / This encryption software isn't immediately intuitive to use.

VERDICT / Advanced Encryption Package Pro has many benefits to make it one of the best encryption software solutions, although it isn't quite as easy to use at the start as other software we tested.

Advanced Encryption Package Pro is one of the data encryption programs that offers the strongest encryption key available. Though it isn't the fastest encryption software or the easiest to use, it includes useful added security features that keep your files private – even when you're ready to dispose of them.

You can expect to spend some extra time at your computer when you encrypt files. Advanced Encryption Package Pro wasn't the fastest, nor the slowest, of the software we tested. We started with 63 files that equaled 128MB to encrypt. This program took nearly a full minute to encrypt that small amount of data, so that means it will take quite a bit longer with a full load, especially compared to the top-rated programs in our lineup. Deciphering took about 20 seconds less.

In our tests, getting started with Advanced Encryption Package Pro wasn't as easy as it was with some of the other programs we tested, and there are no wizards to help you with the learning curve. However, once we used it for a while, it became easier to use. The program actually integrates with the Windows operating system, so you can right-click on any file of yours and choose to encrypt it without having to open the program, which is convenient.

An added benefit of this encryption software is that it compresses your files as it encrypts them, so you end up saving space on your hard drive. And you can create self-extracting (EXE) files, so accessing them from another computer is easy – all you or your recipient needs is the password. You also have several options as to the type of encryption method you use. In addition to AES 256-bit key, this program offers Blowfish, Twofish, Serpent, GOST, CAST and many other types of ciphers, giving you more control over how you want to encrypt your data.

One of the biggest benefits to using Advanced Encryption Package Pro over many other data encryption programs is the number of other security features it includes. The file shredder complements the encryption to ensure the privacy of your files. If you delete a file from your computer using the recycle bin, the file still exists and can be recovered using specific software. Over time, those deleted files are written over with other data as you create and save new files, but not immediately. If you use the file shredder, though, the files you want gone are overwritten with random data several times until they are no longer recoverable.

Like most of the best encryption software, this program includes a password strength meter that helps you determine whether your password is strong enough to keep you safe from brute-force attacks. Long passwords with random characters are your best bet and can keep password crackers from breaking in.

If you're worried about your keystrokes being recorded, you can use the built-in virtual keyboard to click your password in using your mouse and the onscreen keyboard. And once you're finished encrypting, shredding and organizing your data, you can clear your activity history so that anyone who also uses your computer won't know that you've used the program at all.

Regardless of what version of Windows you have, you can use Advanced Encryption Package Pro on your personal computer. It works with versions as old as Windows XP and as new as Windows 10.

On occasion, you need help figuring out how to use a certain feature in software, and this software's manufacturer, InterCrypto, offers a few different ways for you to find that answer. The manual for the program is available on the company's website, along with a how-to guide. There are also screenshots that serve as a visual tutorial to help you learn how to use the program. If you can't find the answer to your question there, you can contact customer support via email.

Summary

Although Advanced Encryption Package Pro doesn't provide the speediest encryption or decryption we saw in our tests, it makes up for it in the number of security options you get. The abilities to shred files and create self-extracting files are excellent complements to the encryption.
