We examined the features, dimensions, reliability, temperatures and energy ratings of dozens of models. After comparing dozens of refrigerators our favorites are the LG LFX28968ST (a French door model) and the side-by-side Samsung RS25J500DSR/AA. They both boast plenty of room and are among the most energy-efficient full-size refrigerators we reviewed. Read more about them – and our best picks for other types of refrigeration – below.

Best French Door Refrigerator
The best French door refrigerator we found in our research was the LG LFX28968ST. It has a super-large capacity of 27 cubic-feet, and the door shelves give you easy access anything you use regularly. It has a chest-style freezer beneath the refrigerator space, which accounts for roughly a third of the total capacity. The slim icemaker takes up minimum space, and the adjustable shelves let you customize the space the way you want. It’s also ENERGY STAR rated and costs an estimated $60 per year to run, which is well below average.
Best Side-by-Side Refrigerator
The Samsung RS25J500DSR/AA is our best pick. It has over 24.5 cubic feet of space and two humidity-controlled crisper drawers to keep fruits and vegetables fresh longer. It also has fast freeze and fast chill features to quickly restore temperature after a loss of cold air to keep food fresh. This Samsung is energy efficient. It uses less energy per year than many similar refrigerators in our lineup and is one of the few Energy Star-compliant models we reviewed.
Our pick for the best freezer is the Amana AZF33X16DW upright freezer. It offers a clean design with adjustable shelves. Plus, the generous door bins give you plenty of room for frozen items you want easy access to, like frozen dinners and ice cream. The Amana freezer also has a reversible door, which gives you the flexibility of orienting the door to open to the left or the right.
Best Wine Cooler
The energy efficient NutriChef PKTEWC18 can be used as a freestanding or a built-in wine cooler, or you can just slide it under your kitchen counters. It keeps up to 18 bottles ready to serve between 53 and 64 degrees Fahrenheit. There is enough room to store 14 bottles on their sides as well as a rack that can handle a few bottles standing upright. This cooler doesn't get cold enough to store sparkling wines, but it is cold enough for reds and most whites. Overall, the NutriChef PKTEWC18 is a great value and an attractive option.
Best Mini Fridge
The Sunpentown RF-244SS is one of the best mini fridges we found in our research. Its 2.4-cubic-foot capacity includes multiple compartments, including door space and enough room for cans and water bottles above and 2-liter bottles below. While it has plenty of interior space, it is compact enough to fit discreetly in an office or under an end table in a bedroom.
The Frigidaire FFFH17F2QW is a large 16.6-cubic-foot capacity freezer that will store more than enough food for a large family. It has generous shelf space in the door, to give you quick access to the foods you eat most.
It is Energy-Star-qualified and boasts several energy-saving features. It has thicker-than-average walls and will keep food frozen for up to two days in the event of a power outage. It has frost-free operation and exterior temperature controls to eliminate the need to adjust the temperature with the door open. The auto-defrost will automatically increase temperature slightly when it senses a build-up of ice so you won’t have to remove food to defrost it.
It lacks an alarm to let you know if the door has been left open, but it does have a child lock to help minimize the chance of that happening. It also lacks a fast freeze feature, so freezing ice cream that’s been left out a little too long could be problem.
Best Mini Fridge
The Midea WHS-87LB1 has a nice capacity for a mini-fridge with 2.4 cubic feet. It makes good use of space with plenty of room in the door for cartons, bottles and other big items. It comes with a mini-freezer to keep a couple frozen treats on hand, and the freezer doesn’t invade too much of the main compartment space. The main compartment has adjustable shelves so you can customize the space to your needs.
This mini-fridge also accommodates the space it occupies with a reversible door so it can be placed at either end of your desk. The freezer does have manual defrost so it will need to be emptied out, unplugged and opened up to defrost. The Midea WHS-87LB1 is a great little fridge with the space needed to keep all kinds of snacks on hand.
