The Kenmore 78423 is an affordable canister vacuum with decent suction and large wheels. It's not as easy to move as the best budget vacuums due to its heavy canister and short hose. For something a little more portable, consider the Dirt Devil Dynamite.
This Kenmore budget vacuum is bagless, meaning you'll spend less money annually than you would with a vacuum that uses disposable bags. Its suction performance was above average on medium-pile carpet and below average on low-pile. This vacuum doesn't stand out, but it does a satisfactory job. We tested each of the vacuums in our comparison by embedding pet hair and dander into thick carpet. This machine didn't perform well. Despite multiple passes, the vacuum couldn't pick up stuck pet hair.
Most canister vacuums are made to be maneuverable, including this one, due to its large wheels. But this vac isn't as portable or flexible as other budget canister vacuums. The hose is short, which means you have to drag the heavy 13-pound canister pretty close to the mess. Also, the power cord is only 15 feet long. While this length is fine for a small apartment, if your living space is bigger, you'll need to unplug the vacuum and change electrical sockets more often.
While the bagless design saves you money, it doesn't save you time. The plastic dust cup is difficult to clean, requiring a lot of work to empty the entire 2-liter bin. Also, emptying the dust bin creates a cloud of allergens when you empty it, the way all bagless models do.
For an inexpensive vacuum, the Kenmore 78423 comes with a lot of design extras and attachments. All of the different tools and accessories are stored on the base of the canister, meaning you don't have to worry about losing them or storing them separately. The soft brushes are great for cleaning upholstery, and the crevice tool helps with hard-to-reach corners and gaps.
Kenmore offers a basic one-year warranty – that is shorter than average for this category.
The Kenmore 78423 vacuum has average power and a good array of attachments, and it won't cost you a lot of money in the long run. It's not the right model for pet owners due to its relatively weak suction. In addition, the dust cup is hard to clean, and it is one of the heaviest vacuums we reviewed.
