Friedrich Chill Premier CCF05A10A: Design and build

  • Two tone white and black
  • LED display
  • Remote control

The Friedrich Chill Premier CCF05A10A is certainly one of the better looking air conditioners out there – which isn't hard when you look at a lot of the competition. This follows the classic design with top and mid grilles although in this case there's a good looking two tone finish. The main body is white while the upper grille and controls are finished in black.

The unit is built with heavy-duty insulation to make sure that noise silencing is optimal for the quietest performance while running. The wide front panel vents are also designed specifically to help reduce the noise of airflow. Externally there is hardened sheet metal which helps to keep external noises from entering the home. Everything is also build with counterweights to make sure vibration is limited, once again aiming to keep this as silent as possible.

There is an 8-way air flow control which is backed by a washable, anti-microbial filter to keep air clean and moving where you want it. Everything can be controlled via a dedicated remote control which also features a display so you can see what you've changed when at a distance.

Depending on the model, you can get this unit in higher BTU options. You can get a slide-out chassis for easy removal and maintenance, or a one-piece frame for easier installation. This particular model has a one-piece frame fixed chassis to make installation quick and hassle-free. There are also expandable side curtains to help fill the window more easily.

Friedrich Chill Premier CCF05A10A: Features

  • Three speed and auto fan
  • 5,200 BTU of cooling
  • App controlled

The Friedrich Chill Premier CCF05A10A has, like most models, a three speed fan which you can control. But it also has a more premium feature in the auto fan setting which will change the amount of airflow to help reach the desired temperature more efficiently. There's also a useful sleep setting to help keep you cool at night without making too much noise.

This unit offers 5,200 BTU which means it's good for cooling rooms of around 150 square feet. Of course if you're in a room with lots of sun or between other warm flats you may need a little more power to cover that same size.

While there is a 24-hour timer and remote control, everything can also be controlled using the unit's Wi-Fi connection. This allows you to work the air conditioner using the FriedrichGo app but also you can voice control it using Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant. While you can control this unit from anywhere, if there is a power cut it will auto restart anyway, so you don't need to worry about coming back to a hot place.

Another nice feature is the five year limited warranty from Friedrich which should set your mind at ease.

Friedrich Chill Premier CCF05A10A: Performance

  • Super quiet
  • Easy install
  • App issues

The Friedrich Chill Premier CCF05A10A unit is certainly quiet. The company raves about how it's 25 percent quieter than the competition in its lab tests. This appears to be a reality as the unit runs very quietly indeed. It also does this while remaining energy efficient as it's rated for an annual cost of around $40 – but of course this varies depending on your actual use.

The Wi-Fi pairing and setup could be easier but it works, as does voice controls using a smart AI like Alexa. There are still a few bugs in the machine that will likely get fixed with updates. Sometimes turning the remote display off actually turns off the air con units itself if you've turned it on using the app. Not a major gripe but an annoyance. Also, you'll need to cycle the remote screen off and on to see changes made by the app or on the unit itself.

All that said, if you stick to using the app everything works well and you can see at a glance what settings the unit is at, right there on your phone – perfect if you're heading home and want to get cooling. This is great as that initial cooling phase is the noisiest so by the time you get home it can be purring along quietly in a perfectly temperate room.

Installation is easy thanks to this being a fixed unit, so it just slides in. Of course that means removal for maintenance is more difficult. That said, this is a reliable brand and you get a five year limited warranty so it's not worth giving too much thought to maintenance.

Should I buy the Friedrich Chill Premier CCF05A10A?

If you want to make a 150 foot room nice and cool without too much noise and you want to do it via voice controls or a smartphone app, then the Friedrich Chill Premier CCF05A10A is ideal. You can rely on it being solid in the long term, well made and good looking – while keeping the price reasonable.

If you want more power, or to save some money, you could go for an alternative model or brand – just don't expect it to be as quiet.

Friedrich Chill Premier CCF05A10A: Verdict

The Friedrich Chill Premier CCF05A10A is a fantastic window air conditioner for the price. It's good looking, well built, super quiet, smart controlled and energy efficient to save you money in the longer term.

While the 5,200 BTU is rated for 150 square foot rooms this will do the job in larger rooms too. Easy installation, great warranty life and a top build quality make this a really reliable and attractive option for your window.
