Pros / The unit costs less to run than any other in-wall air conditioner we reviewed.
Cons / Its compressor warranty period is shorter than average.
Verdict / The Koldfront WTC8001W can effectively cool a space of about 350 square feet. It has a nice feature set but isn’t as energy efficient as the best models we reviewed.
The Koldfront WTC8001W is a solid, affordable wall air conditioner designed to cool and heat a relatively small space – roughly 350 square feet. It is the least expensive in-wall AC we reviewed, and it has the lowest estimated operating costs. This happens somewhat by default, since it is rated to cool the smallest space of any of the AC units we reviewed. For big rooms, you need an air conditioner with a lot more power.
That said, the Koldfront WTC8001W does a good job of cooling the right-size room. It’s also Energy Star certified, which means it meets the Environmental Protection Agency’s conservation requirement of using 15 percent less energy than conventional models. It has three fan speeds, and in the colder months it can heat your room. However, it isn’t very effective as a heater.
This air conditioner extracts less moisture from the air than the other models we review, just 1.8 pints per hour. This is less than half as much as the LG LT1236CER can remove in the same amount of time. Similar to its low operating costs, though, this is simply a reflection of the room size it is made for. This wall air conditioning unit doesn't have a dehumidify-only mode, a feature that is quite rare among similar AC units. As such, it has to run in a cooling mode to remove moisture. Since humidity usually accompanies hot air, this shouldn’t be a problem.
For its price, this Koldfront unit has a lot of nice convenience features. It has a fan-only mode, which circulates air without cooling it, as well as a sleep mode, which gradually increases the temperature during the night. This saves energy and makes the room a comfortable temperature in the morning. Its auto and energy-saving modes automatically adjusts the temperature, turning off the compressor and fan and only running them as necessary.
There is a FAQs section on the company’s website, and you can email customer service representatives. Koldfront includes a two-year warranty that covers both the appliance and compressor. The appliance warranty is the most generous one we saw. However, the compressor warranty is well below average – most manufacturers cover their units’ compressors for five years.
The Koldfront WTC8001W has an auto mode, a fan-only mode, a sleep mode and an energy-saving mode, all of which keep your room comfortable while saving energy. That said, it isn’t among the most efficient units we looked at, and it extracts less moisture from the air than other wall ACs we reviewed. However, it is the least expensive to run. It has a generous appliance warranty but a shorter-than-average compressor warranty. All in all, the Koldfront WTC8001W is a functional, affordable AC unit that works well in small spaces of roughly 350 square feet.
