The GE JB655YKFS is our top choice of the best ovens you can buy, and it balances smart features with a reasonable price. The convection oven promises even and effective baking power throughout the large oven, and the self-clean setting is a welcome inclusion to keep the GE JB655YKFS low maintenance and hygienic.

This oven isn’t perfect, and some users report that its control placement can be tricky when using larger cookware. However, its popularity with users is reflected in its 4.6 star rating across retailers, and thousands of users recommend this oven for its convection cooking and dual burners.

GE JB655YKFS: What you need to know

The GE JB655YKFS is a 30-inch freestanding electric range convection oven. It has five cooking elements and a space-saving design that places the controls at the back of the oven, instead of the burner surface itself.

This oven comes in six colors, ranging from black to white, and with a range of metallic finishes. It’s 47 inches high, 28 inches deep, and 30 inches wide, so although the GE JB655YKFS is a freestanding oven, it does have similar dimensions to many of the best slide-in ranges

The GE JB655YKFS has an RRP of $909, which puts it squarely in the mid-range bracket of single ovens. We’ve seen this model discounted from time to time though, so it could be a great budget option if you find it on sale.

GE JB655YKFS: Main features

Using a rear fan, the convection oven evenly circulates hot air, which delivers a more consistent bake from front to back of the oven. The GE JB655YKFS is also large in capacity. It has a 5.3 cubic foot oven that can cook many dishes at once. At the bottom of this oven you’ll find a storage drawer that can be used to stow away dishes and shelves when they’re not in use.

This cooktop has a self-clean oven, which will save you the effort of cleaning quite so frequently. It also means you can cut down on chemical cleaners, which is a real plus for eco or health-conscious users. The delay clean setting means you can wait until you’re done cooking and out of the room before the cycle begins, meaning you’ll come back to a spotless oven every time. It also has a delay bake setting that allows you to postpone your baking by starting to preheat and cook at a later time.

The GE JB655YKFS features an electric cooktop, which comes with a generous five burner elements given its standard 30-inch size. One of these burners is a designated warming zone, designed to keep food at consistent temperature when it’s done cooking before the rest of your meal is ready. While this is a useful feature, it would be nice if this zone could also function as a regular burner, but because of its hard-to-reach location between two other burners at the back of the cooktop, it’s a good use of what could have been dead space.

The GE JB655YKFS also has a dual element cooktop that can switch from nine to 12 inches in size, accommodating even the largest of pans or pots. Another dual element can switch between six and nine inches, and has a power boil element that will speed up the cooking process by sending a shock of intense heat to your pan.

GE JB655YKFS: User reviews

With 6,500 reviews on Home Depot, 5,250 on Lowe’s, and 550 reviews on Best Buy, this is certainly a popular oven to buy. The GE JB655YKFS averages 4.6 out of a total five stars across all three retailers, which is a decisive vote of confidence from users.

One users writes “I absolutely love the various burner options on the cooktop and there is plenty of room inside for my big cooking dishes.” Another said “This is my first convection oven and it is a major improvement as far as cooking foods evenly goes vs my non-convection oven. I really like the extra warming element on the top of the stove, and the multiple level choices for rack placement inside the oven. I also like the fingerprint resistant stainless steel. The range looks great and is easy to use.”

Of the critical reviews, one common complaint is the design of the controls at the back of the oven. “My biggest complaint is that the back splash where the controls are comes out about three inches and interferes with the cooking space.” This makes sense when you consider the task of putting five burners onto a 30-inch cooktop is only possible through moving the controls.

Should you buy the GE JB655YKFS?

Legions of users love their GE JB655YKFS, and we’d have to say, this would be our top choice of oven. It balances affordability with excellent modern features such as dual burners and convection cooking. This oven is also nice to look at, and comes in a huge range of finishes that are sure to complement just about any kitchen.

The inclusion of a warming burner is a nice thought, although it does take up valuable cooktop space and you could always just turn a burner to a low heat to achieve the same warming result. In fitting five burners onto this 30-inch cooker, GE has moved its controls to the back of the GE JB655YKFS. These controls can be blocked when you use taller pans, so we suggest using your larger cookware on the front two burners. On balance though, we still think this is a great option for those looking for a new oven.
