Pros / This clipper has a compact, easy-to-handle size with a comfortable ergonomic grip.

Cons / It doesn’t have a taper lever or a blending comb to help with fades and blends.

Verdict / The Wahl Comfort Grip Pro is a big contender in home hair cutting. With a powerful motor, self-sharpening blades and impressive quality, the only thing small about the Wahl Comfort Grip Pro is its size.

We like the Wahl Comfort Grip Pro because it delivers smooth, no-snag hair cutting. Although it’s 25 percent smaller than standard Wahl clippers, it has full-size carbon steel blades, and it has more power than any other compact clipper we tested.

We used the Comfort Grip Pro on eight volunteers and were impressed with this clipper’s consistent performance. It was comfortable to hold and easy to maneuver, and it did a great job overall. Our volunteers experienced no pulling, and it was easy for our stylists to cut through their hair regardless of its texture. This gutsy little clipper gave us great results on both fine and thick hair, and its motor didn’t ever overheat. In our tests, we used multiple clippers during each haircut, but we reached for this one most often to finish our work. Of the 10 clippers we tested, this was our favorite hands down.

We experienced only two minor issues with the Wahl Comfort Grip Pro. First, it has a sensitive power button that can accidentally shut off if the unit is laid on its side. Second, it doesn’t have adjustable blades for blending and fading. The two other Wahl clippers we tested, the Elite Pro and Lithium Ion Pro both have taper levers, which gave us more versality in styling.

The scope of our testing of this clipper was limited to cutting hair and detailing necklines and sideburns. However, Wahl promotes it as being well-suited for facial hair trimming and body grooming as well. In terms of its pricing, we would have expected to pay more for the set that turned out to be our Best Overall pick. Fortunately, this Wahl clipper is a great value, and it saves you a trip to the barber.

The Wahl Comfort Grip Pro is 5.5 inches long and comes with a tough, 8-foot cord. Thirteen accompanying attachments give you 10 cutting lengths, right and left tapering capability and a blade guard, all of which can be conveniently stored in the accompanying storage case. The case is padded and reinforced, and there’s plenty of room for the clipper and all its accessories. Typical of most products we tested, the shortest cutting length available is 1/16 inch, and the longest is 1 inch. After you finish using this clipper, its self-sharpening blades can be removed for cleaning.

The Comfort Grip Pro is part of a 21-piece kit that includes scissors, two combs, a beard brush, a hair removal brush and blade oil. While its attachments don’t line up and snap on quite as easily as some of the others we tested, they fit securely and detach with no trouble. As an added plus, the clipper’s built-in thumb rest aids in its maneuverability and helps you avoid getting fatigued during haircuts. Its overall design is very similar to that of the Remington Virtually Indestructible clipper, but the Remington doesn’t have the thumb rest.

Despite its slightly louder-than-average motor, this model still earns our Best Overall label because of how gently it moves through hair. Plus, its guard combs are sturdy, it doesn’t overheat, and it weighs only 11 7/8 ounces, including its cord. Unlike heavier clippers in our lineup, it’s easy on your wrists and fits comfortably in your hand, and we like its soft nonslip grip.

Instructions for using this clipper are printed in English and Spanish. Also, its downloadable user guide includes tips and techniques for cutting, trimming, blending and outlining. If you’re new to home haircutting, these suggestions can help you feel confident as you develop your skills.

Wahl has enough faith in the Comfort Grip Pro to offer solid consumer protection, including a five-year limited warranty that is better than the industry average. Most similar products only have one or two-year warranties, and a lifetime warranty is rare. Customer service isn’t the most accessible we encountered, but Wahl did respond to a voicemail we left outside its business hours, which are Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Central Time.
