Pros / The five burners have several specialty functions including a triple expandable burner, power boil and a warming element.

Cons / It’s very heavy for its size.

Verdict / The Kenmore Elite 95053 has a specialized stovetop, a double convection oven and an organized control panel, making it a family-friendly electric range.

The Kenmore Elite 95053 electric range has a lot to offer. The cooktop includes a triple expandable burner that grows up to 12 inches wide, a large 6.1-cubic-foot oven, two convection fans, and both steam and heat self-cleaning cycles.

This is a tank of an electric range. Although it's a similar size to other models, it's the heaviest range we reviewed. Luckily, this heavy-duty kitchen range is a freestanding model, meaning you don't have to place it between cabinets, though that is an option. This model comes in black, stainless steel and white. The stovetops on the white and black models match the rest of the finish, while the stainless steel finish uses a black trim around the edges and stove.

Stovetop Features

The five burners on this cooktop have different strengths and purposes. In the front of the stove, you can find the powerful 3,200-watt, 9-inch power boil element. The high wattage directed to this element means it heats fast, bringing a large pot of water to a rolling boil quickly. Next to the power boil element is the expandable triple burner with 6-, 9- and 12-inch burner rings. Controlling this element is easy with the corresponding knob. Markings under the knobs make it clear which burner you are activating. Finally, the center 6-inch element is a food warmer that only produces 100 watts of energy.

Dimensions and Warranty

The oven is large, measuring 6.1 cubic feet in capacity. Both heating elements inside the oven generate ample wattage to heat it quickly. The broiling element produces some of the highest energy levels on our lineup. The 4,000-watt broiling element sits at the top of the oven chamber and heats quickly with all that power. The 3,500-watt baking element is hidden beneath the oven floor, making it easy to wipe away food spills and baked-on messes. In addition to quick-heating elements, this Kenmore model has dual convection fans to circulate the hot air quickly and efficiently.

The control panel uses a combination of touch pad controls and plastic knobs. The knobs are easy to use, even the triple burner that uses one knob to control all three elements. The touch pad controls the oven and holds the commands for the timer, self-clean cycle, delay start and oven lock.

Oven cooking controls can be found on the left side of the panel while cleaning and timer settings sit on the right. From the touch pad, you can start convection baking, broiling or slow cooking. If you're new to convection cooking, this electric range has a convection converter to help you find the right settings for cooking your food. In addition, the Kenmore 95053 is the only oven on which we found an Add One Minute button. This feature is handy when you want to brown or crisp food like pizza or cookies without resetting the timer.

To keep the oven clean, this electric range has both steam and heat self-clean cycles. The steam clean isn't as powerful as the heat clean, but it only takes 20 minutes to cycle and helps you avoid the hazards that come from heat cleaning. To start the steam clean, add 1 cup of water to the bottom of the oven and start the cleaning cycle with the bake set on 170 degrees Fahrenheit. The steam clean is best for normal buildup and light soils.

The heat clean feature brings the oven to far higher temperatures to reduce caked-on food to easily cleaned ash. This is an effective method for eliminating baked-on messes, but the burning organic material inside can create smoke and fumes harmful to pets and children. In addition, the high temperatures heat the entire electric range, making it dangerous to touch for up to four hours while the oven cycles. The competing Maytag MER8700 has a convenient remedy that minimizes cleanup; it has a unique oven coating called AquaLift that prevents excessive baked-on food from attaching to the oven walls and floor.

Summary

The electric stovetop holds five burners with three specialized elements for different jobs. The triple ring burner fits virtually any size cookware. The 9-inch power boil element brings water, soup stock or sauces to a quick boil with its ample wattage. Finally, the warming element on the back of the stove doesn't heat quickly but works well for melting, simmering or keeping food warm. All the functions on this electric range are organized smartly on the touch pad control panel. The only downsides to this electric range are Kenmore's lack of online support and the range's disproportionately heavy weight.
