The Maytag SmartFill iron offers moderate wattage which gives it good steam capacity for touch-ups or difficult fabrics, while the self-cleaning functions extend the iron's life.

With 1,500 watts, this steam iron eliminates wrinkles on most fabrics. As we tested it, we found it did a fairly good job ironing polyester, silk, cotton, and linen. However, it struggled a bit to remove wrinkles from denim and wool blends. The iron heats up in just under a minute, so you can get right to work and won't have to wait long.

It has 34 steam holes, which release steam bursts as you iron or you can use this iron to steam curtains or fabrics vertically. You can also adjust the steam gauge as needed, and it only takes 10 seconds for the steam to regenerate after a few bursts.

If you plan on doing a lot of steaming, note that irons with more steam holes are typically better at this task.

Maytag SmartFill Steam Iron: Features

The Maytag SmartFill Steam Iron has a stainless steel soleplate that is U-shaped and measures 9.38 inches in length. With the iron's capacity to heat up to about 150 degrees Fahrenheit, you can switch between the seven fabric and temperature settings as you see fit.

Weighing 2.76 pounds and measuring 5.5 inches tall, 4.5 inches wide and 11.2 inches long, the iron is fairly easy to maneuver and provides enough weight to remove wrinkles. Its swivel cord measures 8.21 inches long, so you have some freedom of movement.

While its reservoir is removable, supposedly for easier refilling, the door cover shuts easily, cutting off the water stream. The max fill line is horizontal and difficult to see, and the tank only holds 7.1 ounces, which is smaller than most other units. However, it does have a sealed cover, so you won't have to worry about leaks if it tips over.

As the iron heats up, the power light stays on, and as soon as it reaches your desired temperature setting, it turns off. The iron has an intuitive interface, and its self-cleaning feature helps extend its life.

The Maytag SmartFill Steam Iron has a three-way automatic shut-off safety feature. If you leave the iron unattended in an upright position for eight minutes or for 30 seconds on its side or face down, it will shut off. Also, the iron's body stays comfortably cool, so you never have to worry about discomfort from heat.

Should you buy the Maytag SmartFill Steam Iron?

The Maytag SmartFill iron and steamer has decent power to get your clothes ironed and looking nice. It does not have the largest reservoir, nor does it heat up quickly. However, it automatically turns off if it's left unused, and its self-cleaning function keeps the iron working for a long time.
