PROS / The lack of a compatibility test means you can get signed in really fast.
CONS / The interface is pretty cluttered and out of date.
VERDICT / The laid-back look and feel of this site might be right for casual dating, but if you are hoping for a match on a deeper level you may want to try something else.
Mate1 seems a little outdated when compared with the other online dating sites we tested, but there is definitely potential for finding a match, and that is what matters most. Our test profile was matched by the Mate1 system with over 1,000 potential dates. There were pages and pages of profiles that fit the parameters we created in our initial setup.
This is one of the dating sites for singles that is doing its best to keep up with Tinder, the most influential digital dating tool in recent years, by offering something like a swipe option. You do not literally swipe, of course, the way you do on the Tinder app, but you can sort through your Mate1 matches by clicking on a Nope, Interested or Skip button under their photos.
With this site, there are no compatibility tests the way there are with most online dating services. Your personality is not defined by a color and there are not pages and pages of questions about your emotions. Mate1 just asks a few basic questions about your looks, education and occupation before you are registered and ready to go. There are only a handful of essay questions that you can opt to fill out as part of your profile later. For casual daters this may be just right, but part of the reason many folks come to a dating website is for a little help with matching. With Mate1 you are kind of on your own for that.
This dating site does offer a fair amount of control in your searches, though there are sites that have more ways to filter. Basic filters include age, geographical location and whether or not profiles have a photo. Advanced search options include things like food preferences, drinking habits, work habits and income. Other sites offer even more ways to filter, though, including filters for keywords.
We didn't get a response to our emails to Mate1 and there is no telephone number to get answers to questions more quickly. You just have to wait for the emailed responses. We were still waiting at the time of publish. There were no articles or other information about dating on the site either. Not everyone wants instruction about dating from a website, but it sort of represents a lack of depth and more of an orientation to casual dating with Mate1, which may be perfect for certain daters.
The lack of compatibility tests and informational articles indicates more of a bent toward casual dating on this site, so Mate1 is not for everyone. Many of the essentials for finding a great date are there, though. A few more search tools would make it even more competitive with the other sites we reviewed. At this point it might be worth a look for matching on the most basic levels of compatibility.
