PROS / BullGuard scored highly in all the tests by AV-Test.
CONS / It provides no protection from ransomware – a potentially devastating threat.
VERDICT / While BullGuard can protect your computer from spyware, it's missing enough detection and removal features to rank it near the bottom on our side-by-side comparison chart.
Editor’s Note: Top Ten Reviews uses test results from the independent laboratory AV-Test as part of our review process for the best antispyware software. AV-Test looks specifically at protection, performance and usability on multiple versions of Windows operating systems, and it performs these evaluations several times throughout the year. We use the most current AV-Test scores available at the time of our review. It is possible that new AV-Test scores will be released after our review goes live on the site. We will consider these scores during our next review of the best antispyware software.
BullGuard is more than just antispyware software. It can also protect your computer from threats like viruses, keyloggers, rootkits and the Trojan horses that deliver them. But it's missing some key elements of the best spyware removal software in our review, like ransomware protection and a gamer mode.
AV-Test is an independent, impartial institute that tests each antispyware program on our side-by-side comparison chart. In every test we consider for this category, BullGuard scored 92 percent, which is just a little above the average for the programs we reviewed. This antispyware software can protect you from almost all the threats your computer faces without causing too much drain on your processing power. BullGuard had a good showing in these tests, just not the best.
Devices like flash drives and external hard drives can infect your computer without you even knowing. BullGuard scans every device you connect to your computer for threats before it allows access. It also checks your email for spyware and viruses before any files are downloaded to your computer. While these features are nice, they're common fare among the best spyware remover software we reviewed.
While BullGuard can shield your computer from most threats, it does not protect you from ransomware, a particularly nasty kind of malware that allows hackers to take control of your computer until you pay them money. This kind of attack is terrifying for anyone who experiences it. All the programs in the top tier of our review can defend against it. We would like to see BullGuard add ransomware protection to its antispyware toolbox.
This software is also missing some other features we look for in this category. For example, it has no gamer mode, which would allow you to put BullGuard in the background while you play full-screen games or watch movies. It may seem like a small omission, but this feature is in nearly all the other spyware removal programs in our lineup.
BullGuard is a decent antispyware program that can protect you against many types of online threats to your computer. It yielded good AV-Test scores and automatically scans email as well as connected devices. But it's missing a gamer mode and protection against ransomware. So while it may suit your needs, it needs to add more functionality before it can rise out of the bottom tier of our side-by-side comparison chart.
