The Sonic Alert Sonic Bomb SBB500ss is the perfect alarm clock for deep sleepers. It’s missing most of the convenience features we looked for, but its blaringly loud buzzer, flashing display and vibrating extension should be annoying enough to wake you up, even if you live in a loud urban environment.
You can snooze the alarm as many times as you want, and it doesn’t reset for the next day until you turn it off manually. In addition, it has an adjustable snooze interval you can set anywhere between one and 30 minutes. It also has dual alarms, so you can set it to go off twice each morning, and each of those alarms can be set to buzz, vibrate or both. However, there is only one vibrating extension, so if you and your partner plan to use the same alarm clock, you will have to decide who needs to be shaken awake more.
The Sonic Bomb earned a B for durability, which is average for this test group. The clock’s screen got a small crack in the corner when we pushed it off a nightstand onto the tile floor in our lab. We also tested the snooze button’s durability by pressing it 100 times with varying amounts of force. This clock’s buttons feel fragile compared to the those on the best models we tested, but the snooze feature continued to function properly after repeated pushing.
You can adjust the display’s brightness to five different settings, and the buzzer volume is also adjustable. This is important for the Sonic Bomb because it doesn’t have a progressive alarm. In addition, you can adjust the buzzer’s pitch – deep sleepers may need a higher-pitch buzz to wake them up.
This is the only alarm clock we tested that uses a 9-volt battery for a backup in case of power outages – 9-volt batteries are typically twice as expensive as lithium button cell and AA batteries. The battery backup saves the time and alarm settings, but the alarm won’t go off during a power interruption.
The Sonic Alert’s Sonic Bomb With Super Shaker doesn’t have as many features as some of the top-rated alarm clocks we reviewed. However, between the loud alarm, flashing display and vibrating extension, it is sure to wake you up. You can adjust the intensity of the clock’s tone and volume to fit your preference. The Sonic Bomb is the best option if you are a deep sleeper or have trouble waking up in the morning.
