The best aspect of any all-in-one printer for home use is how it combines several features into one compact device. The Epson Expression Premium XP-830 Small-in-One exemplifies this with a design that fits on a desk but still packs in the ability to scan, copy, fax and connect to online services. But the real standout feature of the printer is its superb photo printing, which tops every all-in-one printer in our review, making up for some notable flaws.
In our testing, the Epson XP-830 had some imperfections in document printing, like alignment issues in several documents and a fair amount of ink spotting. But while documents lacked in quality compared to top-rated inkjet printers, the photo printing was another story entirely. Photos from the XP-830 were consistently better than ones from any other printer in our review, with excellent detail and superb color quality.
The printer achieves some of this photo quality thanks to its five-cartridge design, which has the usual four colors (cyan, magenta, yellow and black) and a fifth pigment, a black cartridge, which is better suited to printing on photo paper than standard black inks. The extra cartridge does raise the overall cost of ink, which works out to 18 cents per page. There is a high-capacity ink option, but this is the only printer in our review that doesn't see an improvement in price with it – the high-capacity inks work out to 20 cents per page, a far cry from the more economical pricing the best color inkjet printers offer.
The paper capacity is nothing special, with a standard 100-page tray and a 20-sheet photo paper tray. It does, however, include a dedicated tray for printing on CDs and DVDs, provided you use discs with printable labels.
The scan and copy quality was fairly good in our testing, though the document printing issues we saw earlier brought down the copy quality. However, you can also scan and print to cloud storage and Facebook, and a built-in USB port and SD card slot let you scan directly to external storage. The wireless connectivity is hit or miss, with support for Apple AirPrint, but the specifications don't list anything about Google Cloud Print or Mopria wireless printing support, so Android users will need to use Epson's proprietary app for mobile printing.
The XP-830 comes with a standard one-year warranty, with support via phone and email, as well as live chat through the Epson website. Support materials are also available online, with a user manual and FAQs page.
The Epson Expression Premium XP-830 Small-in-One offers the best photo printing from a wireless all-in-one printer in our review. It comes up short in other areas, missing broad support for mobile devices and offering only average document printing, but when it comes to photos, it's the best all-in-one home printer we've seen.
